Rosamund Mawer appears on the 1881 census with her grandparents Joseph and Ann Mawer in Sleaford Lincolnshire. Birthplace Worksop Notts. Birth regn traced with mother's maiden name North. This fits with Joseph's son John Thomas who married Martha North in Melton Mowbray 1874. John Thomas is also in Sleaford on the 1881 census with second wife Hannah Bishop who he married in 1878 at Kirkby la Thorpe near Sleaford. Listed with them is John Robert North Mawer b 1875 & Hannah's illegitimate son. I can find no trace of Rosamund after 1881. John Thomas died in Feb 1891, Hannah is listed a a widow on 1891 census, neither Rosamund nor her full brother are with her. I have found him with his maternal grandparents in Melton Mowbray on the 1891 cenus. Can anyone else have more success than me in tracing Rosamund? |

Thanks, RR - I had discounted the Leeds death because of location - but it makes sense age-wise. |

Martha in 1861 - although the transcription says she was 16, on the image the children's ages have been overwritten and corrected, so it's probably supposed to be 6; |

John is listed as a widow on his second marriage - image on FMP. I had also seen the Leeds death for Martha but not been sure of it as the right one, but given that John was in Melton Mowbray when he married and Worksop when Rosamund was born, he clearly moved around a bit. To add a bit of clarification, the Harmston part the name comes from his father who was actually born Harmston but adopted his step-father's surname of Mawer - hence I'm sure the marriage fits. |
