I think the occupation on the 1939 index could be 'precision grinder on admiralty work' ??

It looks like he has been lazy on writing the 'd' which looks like a 'double L' in the word. If you compare this with some of the other d's they have written, e.g. the word 'unpaid' directly underneath, it is possible.

He probably worked at the Beckingham Shipyard which is practically at the end of the street where he lived. They were doing a lot of work for the Admiralty there.

Marion was a Gray at the time of the Register. The notation for the change in surname to Thompson was made on 4 Jun 1962.
