-- Woman Gaoled For Shop Thefts. --

Admitting a charge of stealing a pair of
stockings and four handkerchiefs valued
at 4s. 9d. from a city store, Doris Shuttle-
worth (22), waitress of Ducie Avenue,
Chorlton-on-Medlock, was sent to prison
for two months by Manchester City
magistrates today.
It was stated that she had been sentenced
to two months imprisonment in June for a
similar offence

Shepton Mallet Journal - Friday 30 July 1937

GAOL FOR CRUEL PARENTS. Describing the case as one of tho worst they had ever known, the Manchester magistrates, Monday, sentenced Ellis Shuttleworth, 22. and his wife Doris, 19, of Thomas Street, Hulme, each to four months’ imprisonment for exposing two-year-old child to suffering and danger. A policeman said that on Sunday a crowd of between 300 and 400 gathered outside the house, where the child was screaming. The child was almost naked and in a dirty condition, while its eyes were almost closed through crying. There was no food in the house. Neighbours provided the baby with food and clothing, and it was taken to hospital. At 11.15 p.m. the crowd was still outside the house awaiting the return of tho mother. To prevent her being attacked police officers met Mrs. Shuttleworth she entered tho street and took her away. The couple, who said they were sorry, each blamed the other.
