Two things.
They are not in the 1871 census. I'm wondering if they went to Ireland - daughter Elizabeth married Patrick Smith who hailed from Clonmel, Tipperary.
Secondly, the baptism of Walter William Barrow was provided by someone doing some work in connection with the English Wesleyan Circuit....

Am finding this a bit of a coincidence - 2 Ralph Barrows, both Provost Sergeants. Unfortunately transcript only, no original
All other records in that period on FMP are for your Ralph and they all show his Discharge date as 1854/5, unfit for further service (failing thought and activity brought about by climate abroad). There is a note on his service records that his pension was increased for 24 years service as Provost Sgt. Jersey. Also says Bd. of 22.11.'81 or '87 No. 26. Perhaps well regarded and a job he could do even if unfit for further active service, releasing a fitter man for action.
He certainly motored, having initially joined the 2nd Dragoons in 1831 and transferred still as a Private 1.4.1839 to the 15 Kings Hussars he was promoted to Corporal a week later and to Sergeant the following year !!
Could he have been on temporary attachment with a different regiment for a period?? In which case, a Service No. may have had to be assigned for pay purposes? Maybe the National Archives WO records would answer.

Ada, another child, died on 18 October 1870, aged 13 years and one month.
I have a death for John Barrow, aged 15 years and three months on 13 April 1862.
Josiah died on 22 Sept 1867 aged 5 years and 7 months.
It leaves, apart from the non-finding of the death for Frances but also the death of Joseph, who was baptised on 2 February 1846. He shows up in Canada in the 1871 census, marries Marie Eustache on 5 April 1874 only to "abandon" his family according to a school register for son Arthur.

Catherine. Thank you for all this.
I have this death for Joseph but a supposed descendent of this Joseph has argued that it is not MY Joseph.
It does seem to be one big coincidence so I think I wil revisit....

Looking back at his reply, he is adamant that it is HIS ancestor (who was actually younger...!?). The record you have found says marital status unknown which seems to be unsurprising....
Joseph is in Canada in 1871.
Do you have access to passenger lists as Ancestry suggests there is info about this. What was he doing in Ontario???
