Try this

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register
There are further links about Intermediary agencies.

Do you have any idea if he was adopted through eg a religious based agency or Bernardo’s?

Are there any margin notations on the certificate? Although others may have a different opinion, an adoption wasn’t legal unless it had been through the courts.

Unless his ‘parents’ had applied for a first passport while he was a child, he would know his registered name. The birth certificate would have to have been submitted with the application. Subsequent passports would have been treated as renewals.

Why not post his birth name on the thread? If he or a current relative makes an internet search for it, this thread will be one of the results. As long as you’ve linked a working email address to your GR account, they’d be able to contact you via this site.

There are several people that have his name in their trees on here. Are you aware of this?
