We must have passed one another in the post

Janet

Janet Report 11 Feb 2019 23:05

I did find this :

SCULLION
JAMES
29
1914
114/AF 71
Service Returns

and these

SCULLION
JAMES
41
1915
672/ 33
Uphall

SCULLION
JAMES
40
-----
1915
038/MR 182
MARINE RETURN

I suppose either or none could be the one. Annie was apparently born in Lanarkshire, married first time in Dunbartonshire and then in Broxburn, so she travelled around a bit.

One interesting snippet I just got from Anne was that she remembered her mother saying she worked in a beetroot factory, which seemed rather odd to me. A Google search brought up reference to a sugar beet factory in Culpar, so I wonder if she was there for a while.

A search of Scotlandspeople of Scullion deaths with mother's maiden surname Scullion shows some possible children from Annie Scullion's first marriage. The latest one was born 1911. Didn't help finding her on the 1911 census though. Perhaps she was a WW1 widow.

Janet

Janet Report 11 Feb 2019 22:17

Oh that is so sad :( Poor Maurice and his family. An early example of killed by friendly fire.

Is it usual for people of the same surname to marry? ie Scullion and Scullion? I see that Bonhll is in Dunbartonshire. Perhaps James Scullion died before the 1901 census was taken.

ArgyllGran Report 11 Feb 2019 21:32

Maurice was a POW on a prison ship which was sunk:

Maurice Kelly
in the UK, Allied Prisoners of War, 1939-1945
Name: Maurice Kelly
Rank: Pte.
Military Date: 1939-1945
Regiment: Royal Scots
Service Number: 3055718
Source Description: 1744: Part II: Prisoners of War, Far East: Sinking of Lisbon Maru, Prison Ship, 2 October 1942

Horrific article about the sinking:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-44814053

List of prisoners on board, including Maurice:

http://www.roll-of-honour.org.uk/Hell_Ships/Lisbon_Maru/html/jkl.htm

Google shows lots of images of the Lisbon Maru, and the sinking, as well as many photos of unnamed men who were on board. No way of knowing if one is Maurice.

Apologies if any of this has been posted before , somewhere in this long thread:

Assuming Annie Scullion/Kelly's YOB given at her death is correct, this may be her birth:

SCULLION
ANNIE
F
1877
625/1 476
Bothwell [ EDIT: No, she was born in Ireland - see later posts ]

And Maurice's birth:

KELLY
MAURICE
M
1917
672/ 78
Uphall

And death (although CWGC gives his age as 29 - already posted):

KELLY
MAURICE
24
1942
150/AF 114
Service Returns

I've had a look at Maurice's birth cert, and interestingly he was registered as John.

Details:

John Kelly. Born 2 April 1917 @6pm at 72 Haligate, Broxburn.
Father: Peter Kelly, oil worker.
Mother: Annie Kelly, previously Scullion, ms Scullion
Parents' marriage: 6 Dec 1916, Broxburn

There's a note in the left-hand margin, possibly referring to the name change or correction to Maurice ??:

"See Reg. of Corr. Entry [?] Vol 2, p. 724, April [something] 1917."

So this is Annie's first marriage:

SCULLION
ANNIE
SCULLION
JAMES
1902
493/ 57
Bonhill

and her marriage to Peter:

SCULLION
ANNIE
KELLY
PETER
1916
672/ 47
Uphall

I don't see Annie and James together in 1911.

Janet Report 11 Feb 2019 20:08

I still haven't heard back from the Kelly contact I made, but looking at her very limited tree it looks as if Annie Scullion was married before Peter. No names show, so difficult to check though.

rootgatherer Report 11 Feb 2019 18:01

I'm not sure I would "rename" them. I would have it as Mary Carr or Kerr, Margaret Ellison or Allison etc. As I was typing up their details, I would use the spelling as shown on each particular record.

Janet

Janet Report 11 Feb 2019 16:00

ah thanks, too many Annies. I've renamed Margaret Allison as Ellison on my tree, and the Carrs are now Kerrs. Also Bridget Donlan/Conlan is now Canlan.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 11 Feb 2019 15:57

Sorry if I confused you, I was just trying to show that there were bits of information that linked the Peter/ Mary Carr children to the Peter's other children by Margaret Ellison.

Annie (daughter of Peter and Mary Carr) born 1887 Manhattan, married James Hamill. She lived Shrine Place.

Annie's half sister, Elizabeth (b1903, daughter of Peter and Margaret Ellison) listed her address as Shrine Place when she was a witness to Margaret's marriage.

Annie's half brother, James (b 1899, son of Peter and Margaret Ellison) listed his address on his military file as Shrine Place.

Janet

Janet Report 11 Feb 2019 15:09

AustinQ - yesterday you said "Both Elizabeth and James are listed at Annie's address (Shrine Place) on at least one record, and we know Annie's mother's maiden name was Carr.". Which Annie are you referring to here? I'm trying to get everything in its right place.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 11 Feb 2019 14:46

It's doubtful you'll find any earlier census for Peter Kelly and Bridget. There are mentions of a Peter Kelly in Griffths Valuation rolls 1860 at Ballynahaye which is likely him.

I think Anne Kelly could be another daughter to Peter and Bridget.

The children we have for them so far are

Possibly Anne c1841
Bridget 1853
Eugene 1855
Catherine 1858
Owen 1860
Peter 1864

ArgyllGran, I am quite sure you NEVER talk rubbish.

Janet

Janet Report 11 Feb 2019 13:44

rootgatherer, that Anne Kelly would have been born when Peter snr's wife Bridget was 21, whereas for Owen and Peter she was 40 and 46 respectively. I wonder if there is a long string of others between Anne and Owen.

Janet

Janet Report 11 Feb 2019 13:27

Oh my, trying to find Peter Kelly who was married to Bridge Conlan in an early census, I have found lists of slaves owned by various people, pages and pages per owner, showing their original name, their current name, colour, age etc. And the one I looked at is dated 1817.

Ann Kelly's death?

ANN KELLY
Date of Death 1917
Group Registration ID 3902406
SR District/Reg Area Dungannon
Deceased Age at Death 80

Housekeeper, spinster informant BROTHER Owen Kelly. So probably Peter's sister who was with Mary Jane Kelly in 1911?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Feb 2019 11:52

DELETED -
I was talking rubbish.

Janet

Janet Report 11 Feb 2019 11:36

That certainly looks possible - now trying to find how Anne Kelly 70 is connected to Peter.

I still haven't found the family in any American census, which seems rather strange.

I'm also trying to find a connection between Peter Kelly and the Ann McCartney, born Ireland, with whom they were all lodging in the 1901 census. It seems reasonable that, returning from America with 2 small daughters, he would have gone to stay with family.

At the moment I'm putting together a "Kelly Family Saga" for Anne, listing everything we have found so far in narrative form, which I think will be easier for her to follow.
