What amuses me is that both the marriage AND the birth of her son were registered in the same quarter. Naughty girl.

Great!
My money's on the birth posted earlier by RG. Although the 1901 census is for the correct family, I think Margaret's area of birth (USA) in incorrect. She may have made her self slightly older to appear to be the mother of the older children:

Name MARGARET ELLISON
Date of Birth 1872, 6 March
Group Registration ID 11647068
SR District/Reg Area Dungannon
Sex N/R
Mother's Birth Surname N/R
Image

Father James, a farmer
Mother Margaret formerly Johnston
Birth register by (looks like) Elspet Johnston

I have just received the Peter Kelly/Margaret Ellison marriage certificate, dated 16th March 1899, at St Josephs RC Church, Tow Law.

Peter Kelly, 30 years, Widower. Colliery Master Shifter, Campbell Street, Tow Law. Father Peter Kelly (Dec'd), Farmer.

Margaret Ellison, 26 years. Campbell Street, Tow Law. Father James Ellison, Farmer.

Witnessed by M. Quin and B. Duggan.

So now I know Margaret's age and her father's name :-)

Hi Jan,
The electoral registers are from FMP. Historical electoral registers 1920- 1932.

1929 is the last time I see Peter listed in Uphall.

Janet

Janet Report 16 Feb 2019 19:28

May I ask how you search electoral registers by name/place? I tried on Ancestry and had 0 results.

Isn't it amazing how, when you see something in print, the hand writing becomes clearer - the marriage was December 1908, so registered in 1909:

KELLY
JAMES
DAWSON
SARAH

Uphall

Janet

Janet Report 16 Feb 2019 17:15

In the 1925 Valuation Rolls, the Holigate houses were owned by the Broxburn Oil company, for which Peter Kelly worked.

Anne ordered both 1919 birth certificates for Annie Kelly born Uphall, the other was born on 9 September, 6 days after our Annie, to James Kelly (Shale worker) and Sarah nee Dalvron (the writing isn't very clear, but that's what it looks like), married 31 December 1908 in Broxburn, living at 45 Old Haligate, so now I'm going to try and find out if they were related too.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Feb 2019 16:30

Peter Kelly doesn't appear in the Valuation Rolls in Holygate (or anywhere in Broxburn) until 1925.

In 1915 and 1920 a James McMullan is at no 70/71.
A John Smith was also at no 71 in 1915.

So Peter moved to that address somewhere between 1920 and 1925.

Perhaps in 1919 they were lodging with the MacKenzies.

Today I have received Annie Kelly's birth certificate, 1919. We know its the correct one because she was born on 3 September, which is what the cert says, and the address is 72 Haligate, Broxburn - which is interesting, because so far Peter Kelly only rented 70 and 71.

Still waiting for the Margaret Ellison/Peter Kelly marriage cert.

Jan, don't bother. If you need a FMP lookup just ask on here. I no longer do Ancestry but just because I got a much better deal with FMP three years ago. Just too much money to do both. Plus what I spend on Scotlandspeople.

Janet

Janet Report 12 Feb 2019 13:46

£6 a month on top of Ancestry subscription makes it rather expensive, I'll have to think about it.

Janet

Janet Report 12 Feb 2019 13:36

Yes, I am using Ancestry, I haven't used FMP, I'll have a look at it, thank you

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 12 Feb 2019 13:30

Perhaps you're using Ancestry, Jan?

Rootgatherer got the 1939 from FindMyPast, where the transcription's laid out in a slightly different way.
FMP's 1939 is also sometimes more up-to-date than Ancestry's - some records still showing as closed on Ancestry are open on FMP.

Janet

Janet Report 12 Feb 2019 12:43

You must have access to a different way of finding records, as your index to the 1939 is much better than mine
