” FULLETBY MAN KILLED.—News has been received by Mrs. Ranyard, of Fulletby, near Horn castle, that her son, Lance-Corpl. H. Ranyard, of the l/4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (Territorials) was killed on Sept 18th. The officer commanding A Company (Capt CS Gray) in a letter says " I deeply regret having to report that your son, Lance- Corpl Ranyard, was killed in action by shrapnel today. He was doing his duty in the fire trench at the time and died almost instantly. He was a very trust worthy, conscientious NCO and I hope the fact he was doing his duty like a good soldier will be some consolation to you in your great bereavemant." The deceased soldier was 33 years of age and in 1902 joined the Coldstream Guards, serving 5 1/2 years before receiving his discharge with good conduct papers. Since then he has lived with his widowed mother at Fulletby and has worked for Mr. Farrow, farmer, Fulletby Grange, and also for the Rural Council on the roads. He joined the Territorials last October.

How absolutely heartbreaking for all the families who received letters like these :-(
REPORTED WOUNDED MANCHESTER REGT.—Ranyard (24510), G. (Horncastle).
