Hello All.
I have just come into possession of my grandfather's WW1 records. One page is headed "Special Remittance" and shows that the sum of $25 was paid in either September 1917 or possibly 1915 to an Iva/Eva Clark who was living at Milton House, Hespeler Road, Galt, Ontario
I am intrigued as to who Iva/Eva was. My grandfather never returned to Canada after his discharge at the end of the war.
Any help or suggestions please.

The only Eva in 1911 is an Eva Ayd
Iva seems a popular name.
For instance this family in 1921 has a daughter Eva and a daughter Iva:
Iva Stork in the 1921 Census of Canada Name: Iva Stork Gender: Female Marital Status: Single Age: 15 Birth Year: abt 1906 Birth Place: Ontario Relation to Head of House: Daughter Father's name: Fredrick Stork Father Birth Place: Ontario Mother's name: Eva Stork Mother Birth Place: Ontario Racial or Tribal Origin: German Province or Territory: Ontario District: Waterloo South District Number: 137 Sub-District: Hespeler (Town) Sub-District Number: 33 City, Town or Village: Hespeler Town Street or Township: Queen St Municipality: Hespeler Occupation: Gill Roose Income: 650 Neighbors: Household Members: Name Age Fredrick Stork 54 Eva Stork 46 Alenyn Stork 18 Freda Stork 16 Iva Stork 15 Eva Stork 12 Grieta Stork 9 Gladys Stork 7 Glifford Stork 2 Lola Stork 1
But I don't see an Iva or Eva Clark in Hespeler or Waterloo or Galt in 1911 or 1921.
A Google search doesn't bring up anything about Milton House, but apparently Milton is now a very sought after area of Cambridge, Ontario. Galt is also part of Cambridge nowadays.

I have now read through all 86 pages of his army records!!! and had to wait until page 76 until I found the entry you were talking about.
It was paid to Miss Iva Clark and the address was as you mentioned. The only thing extra I can see is that it seems to have been paid on 6th September 1917 - cheque number is also given but I can't see that will help so many years on. BUT there was also mention of the payment relating it to 'Schedule 425'. Now, this 'may' prove useful if we can find what that schedule covers.
You could try posting on the forum below - someone may be able to help you?:

In the meanwhile, I will see if I can find anything further............

Hello Dea.
Wow good on you for ploughing through the 86 page! I was amazed when I found them only recently. Yes I wondered what that schedule is. I think I will e-mail the archive and see if they can shed any light on that. I am thinking it was some girlfriend but why she should receive the money I can only speculate !! Of course, I wonder if there is a Canadian relative none of us knew about (in the form of a baby eh?!!). I will do as you suggest and post on the forum.
Many thanks for your time and effort.

You are welcome Sue.
He seems to have married in 1918 to a Lilian Dorothy so he didn't marry Iva then?
I also note that he had a tattoo on his right arm - the record says it is of a rose and a girls head but then it also says 'INA'. Unless this signifies something else it could possibly be that the name of the girl was Ina not Iva. It does appear to have her as Iva on that record but you never know.
I have looked and both Ina and Iva are quite common names in Canada.

If the girl's name was Ina, it could be a shortened form of any name ending in "Ina". In Scotland, Ina can be an abbreviation of many names including Christina, Williamina, Jamesina, Georgina etc. It may be worth searching census records in the correct area using *ina Clark as she would possibly appear on the census record using her "proper" name.

There are a number of Clarks in Galt in 1911 and 1921 , and some in the Hespeler area of Waterloo. But none called Eva, Iva, Ina, *ina, or anything similar And none actually in Hespeler Road.

Hello Dea.
Yes he did marry Lilian They are my grandparents and I clearly remember them both. My interest in Iva is sparked for two reasons firstly nobody in the family has hear of her and secondly L&D married in December 1918 just two months before my Dad was born so obviously knew each other at least in early 1917 ! Clearly Iva/Ina meant something to him.
Yes that's his travel details. According to Dad's youngest sister - the only surviving member of that generation Leonard's parents were not very kindly people and they sent him off to Canada to find work.

Many thanks Margaret.
Seems if Iva and Leonard each found happiness elsewhere if they were together before Leonard came back to UK

Thanks for that Dea.
Am going to do some rooting around myself hopefully next week as I am now all prepared for Christmas and have more time. There is a strange co-incidence regarding Scotland which I will tell you about when I have a few spare moments. This is just to thank you so very much for what you have done so far.
All the very best.

Ancestry suggests this is Ina's immigration record - but the family details don't match.

Ina /Rosannah's brother James did go to Canada, though I don't know when. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915, and he married in 1925 .
