If you look at Dea's comment in this thread you will see that she decided to post to the other thread and that's why everything is on that one.
Thanks for checking though.

Hi Yvonne,
I have been looking at this all morning and I cannot yet connect your Joseph to Hugh and I am not yet certain that the John who died was indeed Hugh's son. However, I have found a link between Joseph's and Hugh's family later on which you might like to explore?
I am in a quandary about where to post all the info as there is another thread on Joseph's family where there is a definite link for the info so I am going to put it all on there and perhaps this one should remain purely for info on the John who died.
You can be forgiven for having 2 threads as when this one started it was NOT really relating to a member of the other family but now they are in danger of becoming entwined so here is a link to the 1st thread for reference :
https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1374354
I will post further info on there until we can find for certain the family of the John who died. - I can say with certainty that it was not the Joseph on the other thread.

I originally thought he was the son of my Joseph Naylor and Anne Cole but it isn't correct. I found some old notes that I have and the John Naylor who had the accident was the son of Hugh Naylor. The note I have is a grave inscription, which says Hugh died in 1877, age 68, making him born about 1809. The John who had the accident is in the same grave, but there is no wife for Hugh. I'm wondering if Hugh could be a sibling of my Joseph who was born in 1819. The grave is in St. Helens at Christ Church, Eccleston.
I'm having trouble finding Hugh - the only one I can find was born in 1811 with father shown as Mark Naylor. Father of my Joseph was John.
Any suggestions??

Thanks safc, that's definitely him. What an awful way to die. I wonder if that word on the certificate could be venting shaft. I guess it doesn't matter now since you've very kindly found the story. Thanks again.

yesterday morning about 7-00 a collier named john naylor met with his death at thatto heath uder the following circumstances the deceased and another man had been engaged about a fortnight in sinking the shaft of a colliery at thatto heath for mr j cross. at the time stated above he went down to resume work, but no sooner had he reached bottom than he shouted to the men above to draw him up again, this they proceeded to do but when he got about 5 yards from the top he evidently became insensible and fell out of the hoppat, to the bottom of the shaft. a distance of 25 yards by lowering a light the air was found to so foul that about an hour was spent in restoring the ventilation before the body could be got at and sent up. when it was conveyed to his mothers residence close by. the deceased was 32 and unmarried

I'm in need of some educated guesses! I have a death certificate for John Naylor (born about 1842/43). He apparently died 17 June 1875 in a work related accident. I'm trying to read the cause of death -
Falling from hopper in -en-ing shaft. Struck by foul air at bottom. Instant death.
His occupation was shown as coal miner and what looks like tinker.
Any guesses as to what kind of shaft it was?
Thanks.
