I have ancestors with this surname who were from the Chester and wider Cheshire area. I wondered whether anyone also has this name in their tree and whether any member served in the armed forces during WW1. My main connections appear to have been Birkenhead and Chester. Here's hoping and thanks for looking. Harpist.

There is this baptism for Emma but I can't see a registered birth for her:-
First name(s) Emma Last name Candeland Gender Female Birth year 1872 Baptism year 1872 Baptism date 15 Dec 1872 Place Birkenhead, St Peter County Cheshire Country England Father's first name(s) Arthur Father's last name Candeland Mother's first name(s) Charlotte Record set Cheshire Diocese of Chester parish baptisms 1538-1911 Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Parish Baptisms Collections from England, Great Britain
Perhaps her birth wasn't registered as there were no penalties for not registering a birth until after 1875. It would seem strange though, as her older sister Eliza WAS registered.

Sorry not to have got back to you all sooner, but my internet connection has been down and a few other problems as well. Anyway thank you all for your replies. First of all Jane Candelanmd was my grandmother and Arthur the blacksmith and coal dealer was my Gt grandfather. I think that Peter Candeland was from another branch of the family, not mine. My main interest at the moment is which of the men in my family were in WW1. I know definitely that one of Jane's sons was in the 17th/21st Lancers, but details are sketchy - even his own daughters don't know about his army career. I belive that possibly one of the Candeland sons was in the Royal Navy and stationed at Plymouth where there are still some of that name today apparently. Thank you again. Kind regards to all, Harpist.
