I was referring principally to the OP's reference to Charles's 'parents'

But they must have been living together before marriage as three of the children are reg as colenso / collenso pre 1901

One important thing to remember about censuses is that the stated relationship of each individual is only to the HEAD of the household.

You can't assume that his wife is the mother of all or any of the children recorded on the census.

Always look at all of the info, particularly in 1911, where extra details (years married being one of them) are given.
