The above was the son of William Albert Gibson, a miner, according to his marriage certificate when he married Jane Ellen Lees 15 Sep 1929 at St Mary, Lambeth. His occupation was recorded as Private 1st Battalion Scots Guards. I guess this means that he was a professional soldier and wonder if he was born in Scotland or at least the north of England? After their marriage I can find no more records for them, other than the birth of a son in 1930 at Lambeth? It might be that he was in fact Alfred Howell Gibson b 6 Sep 1904 but his parents were John William Gibson born in Bishop Auckland and Lavinia Howell born Normanton. Alfred's wife Jane E passed away June 1933 Auckland aged 22. Confused.com! :-(

Have you found the parents on the 1901 and 1911 census
The Scottish one is on Ancestry but the 1911 is only available on Scotlands People which isn't a subs site

If he were born in Scotland & didn’t have a middle name, there are these potential births
GIBSON ALFRED M 1907 168/2 1573 St Machar
GIBSON ALFRED M 1907 672/ 161 Uphall
GIBSON ALFRED M 1908 030/ 19 Stromness
I’d searched 1906-1908 to cover fibbing & a late 1907 birth.

You probably have this already:
1911 Census For England & Wales
25 Stanley Pit Crook, Crook and Billy Row, Durham, England
John William Gibson Head Married Male 31 1880 Miner Hewer Coal Bishop Auckland Durham Lavinia Gibson Wife Married Female 33 1878 - Normanton Yorkshire Alfred Howell Gibson Son - Male 6 1905 - Middlesbro Yorkshire Joseph Edwin Gibson Son - Male 3 1908 - Middlesbro Yorkshire Raymond Gibson Son - Male 0 1911 - Stanley Auckland Parish
The marriage, which was crossed out and marked 'cancelled' has the father as William Albert Gibson, a miner:
Name: Alfred Gilson Marriage Age: 22 Record Type: Marriage Birth Date: abt 1907 Marriage Date: 4 Aug 1929 Marriage Place: St Mary, Lambeth, Lambeth, England Father: William Albert Gilson Spouse: Jane Ellen Lees
There is a civil entry for the marriage - maybe they went to the register office instead?
Marriages Sep 1929 Gibson Alfred Lees Lambeth 1d 663 Lees Jane E Gibson Lambeth 1d 663
EDIT: The cancelled marriage was Aug 4th, they did marry on 15th Sept. Witnesses were William H Lees and H W Rosser. Bridegroom said to be 22 years old.

The military record Maddie found shows his birthplace to be Middlesborough, Yorks, which ties in with census 1911.
He attested at Durham, and was a miner when he enlisted.
He was discharged L'don 14.8.1939.

If he was discharged in Aug 1939, could he have been called up later from the Reserves? There's no death recorded on the CWGC site.

Finally found the son, living with his grandparents in 1939 - they are the parents of Alfred Howell Gibson as per the 1911 census, so looks like we are right that Alfred Howell Gibson is the correct man, despite the variation in his age and his father's name on the 1929 marriage register.

At least he got the occupation - miner, right! :-)
Also, Alfred Howell Gibson had been a miner at the time he attested for the military, and he attested at Durham, where the family were in census 1911, not sure why he got his own age wrong at the first marriage either, unless he didn't want to seem like a cradlesnatcher.
