Marriage of Christopher Thompson

Marian Report 29 Jul 2018 15:48

Hello, I am looking for the marriage of Christoper Thompson (born approx 1796 at Bamburgh, Northumberland to Thomasin ???? Thomasin possibly also born Bamburgh.

Their first child Isabella is baptised1817 at Tweedmouth. Then Frances, Thomasine and Christopher Redhead are baptised at Berwick, Tweedmouth. I thought maybe Thomasin's surname may be Redhead but can't find anything. Another daughter Mary is born round about 1832.

In 1841 census they are at Pittington, Co Durham. In 1851 census Christopher is with his daughter Frances, at Byers Green, Co Durham and Thomasine is at her daughter Marys at Gilesgate, Durham. In 1861 they are are at Whitwell House, Co Durham (their grandson Christopher Ritchie aged 11 is with them -Mary's son).

I only have access to Family Search.

Hope the above is enough - thanks.

A tree on Ancestry says that Christopher Thompson was born 1796 Bamburgh to Richard Thompson and Frances REDHEAD. No supporting evidence given.

They haven't found the marriage to Thomazine either.

EDIT:

Freereg does have a Richard and Frances as Christopher's parents:

Thanks Kucinta. His parents are probably correct as Christopher's son Christopher has the middle name of Redhead. I had assumed that he had been called after his mother's maiden name but not so. I guess Thomasine's surname could be anything (assuming they actually got married). the search goes on.

Thanks again.

Apparently Bamburgh marriages 1763-1836 are viewable with a Gold subscription to The Genealogist - 3 months for £24.95.

Familysearch has images of Bamburgh parish records that can be browsed through, as they are not indexed.

I was able to confirm the baptism of Christopher on April 3rd 1796 to Richard and Frances Thompson, as posted above.

Trouble is, we don't know if Christopher and Thomasine were married at Bamburgh, so there could be quite a lot of trawling to do...

EDIT Unfortunately the records only go to 1812... :-(

Thank you Kucinta. I've got plenty of time on my hands to do that. I may also try Durham records office also as it's only about £1.50 to order a record. Thanks also Argyll.

As the 1841 has Thomasin in Northumberland but it is stated on there that this was not her County of birth, should we also be looking at Scottish records perhaps for a marriage?

Marian Report 29 Jul 2018 18:31

Hello Dea, at the minute I'm trawling through the parish records for Tweedmouth which is where their daughter Isabella was baptised in 1817. I'm now up to 1818 in case they got married after Isabel was born. I did wonder because of the age of Christopher whether they had got married in Scotland. Did they still elope to Gretna back then?

One thing to note about that time in Northumberland was that many people were non-conformist and these records are held separately from parish records.

The Northumberland Record Office has a lot of non-conformist records transcribed which makes them quite easy to search through.

We once spent a whole afternoon trawling through parish baptisms looking for my husband's great grandfather, only to be told by one of the ladies working there just 5 minutes before they closed that Northumberland had lots of non-conformists.

She found the record we were looking for in about 2 minutes!

Hello Sylvia, Thomasine is a visitor at Love Street, St Giles, Durham aged 49 and birthplace just says Durham. The 1871 census has her at Whitwell house, Durham (widowed) and her place of birth says Hasfield, Durham. This is off family search.

Place of birth doesn't look like Hasfield - much more like Hospital !!

Their son Christopher Redhead Thompson was baptised 18 Feb 1827 at Berwick, so this could be him but it says born yorkshire, but I've just looked at 1881 (I can't get the original) on fam search and it says born Scotland for Christopher. 1891 back to born England.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 29 Jul 2018 22:00

Remember that Berwick is on the border of England and Scotland and has changed between being part of Scotland and then England many times - although I don't know when this stopped happening.

Hello, Christopher was baptised 18 February 1827 at Berwick, according to Family Search. I've come to the conclusion that Christopher and Thomasin maybe didn't get married. Thanks.
