Unlikely at that time they would have divorced as it was expensive and rare among ordinary working folk. Often when couples split up they either found new partners and lived as husband and wife or married bigamously. |

Thanks for info, I knew divorce was really only available to those who could afford it but Charles father was reasonably wealthy by all accounts so I thought maybe he had agreed to pay for it. When their daughter got married it was stated that her father was deceased and it was her uncle Edmond whose name was on the certificate. Just wondered if Charles had legally divorced but having now said he was put as deceased then I agree he more than likely did marry bigamously or just lived with Mary. Thank you again. |

He is my grandfather. As I said on the marriage to Esther - Charles L.s fathers name was on the certificate and the folk on the 1881 census are my relatives so I am sure these are the correct Charles Laurence Baker. Some other information has come via a distant cousins tree |
