Info I have Birth cert - George William Goode Born - 24/04/1861 New Street, Haughley, Stow Suffolk Father - left blank Mother - Maria Goode 1871 Census - Living with mother now called Maria Chinery and Edward Chinery and he is listed as Son? Not found on 1881 census with Maria and Edward? Married to Florence Lambert by 1891 Census Marriage Certificate 14/09/1884 Father listed as George Goode? New to this so I guess I have many questions and any help would be great but I guess the obvious ones are - - could father be left blank on marriage certificates and would he have just made up a father’s name the same as his own? - On the 1871 census Edward is listed as father would this be automatic, a mistake, could he be the father and he was born prior to marriage? - Are there any other sources to look for that could provide further info? Thanks

	To answer your questions .............. New to this so I guess I have many questions and any help would be great but I guess the obvious ones are - - could father be left blank on marriage certificates and would he have just made up a father’s name the same as his own? - On the 1871 census Edward is listed as father would this be automatic, a mistake, could he be the father and he was born prior to marriage? - Are there any other sources to look for that could provide further info? --------------- Father could be left blank on the marriage certificate, and yes, a name may be made up to hide the fact that he was illegitimate, or the name of a close male relative or someone well-known in the village or town or any other variation could also be put A child would be assumed to be the son/daughter of the Head of the house, but could be the son of the WIFE. Sometimes shown as step-son or son-in-law (daughter-in-law) until around 1880 or so. Edward could be the father .......... but not safe to make that assumption. Other sources ............. If you could find his baptism and look at the actual Parish Register, some vicars did make a notation as to the father of a child. However they are more likely to put base-born/illegitimate/bastard or spinster or unmarried woman after the name of the mother.
