He's also listed as a spectacle maker in 1905, though no address given:
William Daniel Harding in the London, England, City Directories, 1736-1943 Name: William Daniel Harding Residence Date: 1905 Residence Place: London, England Occupation: Spectacle Makers
I wonder if this is him ? Resigned December 1890 - "Defaulter".

In the divorce petition, one of the addresses at which Maud & William had lived during their marriage was 12 Hyde Park Mansions.
William's still living there in 1904:
William Daniel Harding in the London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965 Name: William Daniel Harding Year: 1904 County or Borough: City of London Ward or Division/Constituency: London Street address: 12 Hyde park mansions
However, he doesn't seem to be there in 1911.
In 1904, the page of names and addresses is headed "Spectacle makers" ???? Also in other years, including 1901, though I can't see him on the 1901 census.

Re the divorce petition -
the image on Ancestry says "Petition filed 1 May 1890. Dismissed 16 June 1890".
It was dismissed "upon hearing the solicitor for the petitioner."
No reason given for dismissal - presumably Maud changed her mind.
On 2 December 1889 it was ordered that the petitioner (Maud) be appointed Guardian of Dorothy during her minority.
Between 1884 and 1890, William committed adultery with several women on various occasions.
William left Maud in Feb 1888, and he had then lived separately from her and "deserted her without reasonable excuse for 2 years and upwards."
EDIT: Oh, Nicola has already posted this while I was typing.

The petition for divorce was filed on 1st May 1890 and dismissed on 16th June same year. Petitioner was our gal on grounds of adultery.
So Greyghost's hunch was correct - as usual!
And I think that the muddle with the 'Stewart' is indeed a mistaken interpretation that she might have had a double-barrelled surname.
Well done to all and many thanks.

Going back to Maddie's earlier post re Herberts probate 1923
Probate to Maud Ada Magdelen Harding, WIFE of William Daniel Harding. It specifically says WIFE of ...................... Do you know when he died?
Again, we don't know what records you have -
Divorce Index Transcription
First name(s) William Daniel Last name Harding Title - Petition year 1890 Party number 2 Country England & Wales
the image says Harding (Maud Ada) v H (William Daniel)
This is a Petition but did they actually divorce, it might be the reason Herbert and Maud didn't marry if she was still married?
Her probate says Harding or Cundell. If she was known as Cundell then the record would reflect that but also her actual name.
As for the Stewart Cundell, I just wonder if his surname was sometimes mistakenly thought to be Stewart-Cundall?

I think that the fact that the faithful servant Mary Austin is with the Cundell couple in 1911 is looking very positive that this has indeed been cracked.
What a revelation in many ways - just as you think a post is going to be an innocent [?] sounding query, a whole can of worms opens up. The joys of family history!!
Wonder why they never married?
Many, many thanks to you all. :-D :-D

? Grace Gertrude as Lardner, previously Hicks and Mother Jane "Seyman" - looks to be Seymour on original. Grace said to be born County Fermanagh and Jane Halifax, Nova Scotia on original. Was this an Army family? Not that it's pertinent to Maud!

An Ancestry tree sights the 1911 census as proof of a marriage of Herbert to Maud A Davies in 1905 i.e. married 6 years
That same tree also has a 1920 ER showing Herbert Stewart Cundell and Maud Ada Madeline Stewart Cundell at 2 Aubrey Walk (Holland Ward, Kensington and Chelsea)
If his probate names her as Maud Harding and describes her as wife of William Daniel Harding, did Herbert and Maud actually marry?
