Hi, I am trying to tie in my family line beyond 1823. George was born 1823 in Middlesex, England, married Jane (BATCHELOR), b. abt 1822 in BRIGHTON, Sussex. George's father is eluding me! I have 2 possibles but cannot corroborate either as his actual father. Either: HINDLEY, Joseph b. abt 1799. Resident of MARYLEBONE 1841 (Census) or HINDLEY, Charles b. abt 1790, Manchester
As I do not have a definitive place of birth for George I am struggling to find his full birth record :-(
Any help very much appreciated. Cheers, Bob

Thanks for that Maddie. My problem is.... the Charles I found was born, married and buried in Manchester but, George and his siblings were all born in Middlesex :-(
I have a nasty feeling I am following the wrong line and lead! :-(
I have my fathers birth certificate and am awaiting certificates for his father (John Thomas HINDLEY) and Grand Father (Charles HINDLEY)

:-S :-S
It gets more complicated the more I enquire
:-S :-S
Thanks for your input and I will keep all of that in mind. Probably not the 1847 birth, Shirley, as that would make him 6 years old when his son, Charles, was born!! (b. abt 1853)
George (b. abt. 1823) may have been apprenticed in Brighton, hence marriage there even though born in Middlesex.
Such fun :-D

Robert - Shirley's post doesn't say he was born 1847, but rather asks if he had to be baptised before he was married. It may have been that he wasn't baptised at birth, but was as a pre requisite for marriage or even decided as an adult that he wished to be baptised? Regardless of your post below, Shirley, until she edited her post, was questioning about the George who it was thought to be your relative. Not until the edit was it realised that it was a different George.

Maybe if I give a little more information:
My Father: Charles George HINDLEY Spouse Daphne May (DARNELL) b. Nov 1913 Stepney b. May 1931 London d. Aug 1998 d. Apr 2018
Grandfather: John Thomas HINDLEY Spouse Ada Eveline (PATTRICK) b. 1881 Bethnal Green b. Jan 1886 d. 1959 d. 1978
Great Grandfather: Charles HINDLEY Spouse Charlotte Ann (MARSHALL) b. Oct 1853 b. 1857 d. Oct 1908 d. 1896
G. Great Grandfather George Hindley b. 1823 d. 1854
Those are all confirmed, then it gets hazy :-)
George possibly married to Jane Ellis (BATCHELOR) or that maybe a complete wrong direction, although I have found a potential marriage record.

If you look up the children born to George and wife Jane on the GRO site (you need to register but it's free) you can check the maiden name of the mother of George's children in their index:
eg this Charles Hindley born 1853 has a mother maiden name BATCHELOR:
HINDLEY, CHARLES BATCHELOR GRO Reference: 1853 D Quarter in THE SHOREDITCH DISTRICT Volume 01C Page 192
Other Hindley - Batchelor children...
HINDLEY, ADA EMMA ANN BATCHELOR GRO Reference: 1852 D Quarter in THE SHOREDITCH DISTRICT Volume 01C Page 180
HINDLEY, JANE JULIA BATCHELOR GRO Reference: 1849 S Quarter in BRIGHTHELMSTON Volume 07 Page 325 Order
There may well be more, you need to check yourself as you can only check one gender at a time, for a max of a 5 yr period at a time.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp
Interestingly one daughter is registered in Brighthelmston Reg Dist., the year after the marriage of Jane Batchelor and George Hindley in Brighton.

Hey Kucinta, Yes, that George and Jane are indeed my ancestors, it's George's father that is the problem. No matter how I look up his parents I cannot, indisputably, define his Father and Mother, with out a birth certificate or full registry entry. Thanks for putting in the time to look though :-)
I am registered on GRO ;-)

I wonder if there is something going on like George might have been adopted at some point by father Charles, the insurance chap. The unmarried one reported on the census earlier in this thread might then well be the same man mentioned as father Charles on the marriage details. It might also account for lack of documentation or baptism record for George. Just a thought.
BTW, I was responding to this line you posted earlier re George and Jane.
"George possibly married to Jane Ellis (BATCHELOR) or that maybe a complete wrong direction, although I have found a potential marriage record."
Jane's father is named as William Batchelor on the marriage record.
