Member Since: February 2018 Posts: 36 Send Message	Looking for James Bates born between 1864 - 1867 in Lichfield. His parents are Robert born 1829 St Anne's Middlesex and Hannah Parrott born 1838/39 Bedfordshire. I have looked for a birth certificate for him but can't find one. Wendy

	His birth may not have been registered.it wasn't compulsory till 1875 Have checked on the GRO site and he wasn't registered Looks like he was an only child too

	For helpers' reference: James Bates in the 1871 England Census Name: James Bates Age: 4 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867 Relation: Son Father's name: Robert Bates Mother's name: Hannah Bates Gender: Male Where born: Lichfield, Staffordshire, England Civil Parish: Darlaston Ecclesiastical parish: Darlaston St George Town: Darlaston County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Registration district: Walsall Sub-registration district: Darlaston ED, institution, or vessel: 12 Household schedule number: 84 Piece: 2956 Folio: 11 Page Number: 15 Household Members: Name Age Robert Bates 42 Hannah Bates 31 James Bates 4 In 1881 his YOB is c1866, and in 1891-1911 as c1865 - always Lichfield. His marriage cert (1888) gives his birth as c1864. But as Shirley says, registration wasn't compulsory then.

Member Since: February 2018 Posts: 36 Send Message	Yes I think your correct i have looked everywhere for him and cannot find his birth registered. I couldn't find his parents in 1861 either. In 1871 they lived in Darlaston. Thanks for the help anyway
