Hello Greyghost,
Thank you for getting back to me, I have not been well but that is no excuse, for not thanking you for your help. I know nothing of my Maternal Grandfather except what is on my Mother's birth certificate " Arthur Archibald Cupples" born Ireland. I have found no marriage certificate for them, only that information on the 1916 Alberta Census. Some family members say the Archibald Cupples that is buried in NZ is my Grandfather, but I have no proof. I can't even find him entering Canada or USA in 1898 as stated on the Census. If any of this can be proved I would be over the moon. I do thank you and everyone for your help, so sorry for my delay in responding. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards Louise Tayler

I had sent a message to Grace yesterday asking her to return to the boards.
If Archie Senior and Sarah married in 1901 and young Archie was born October 1902 it would seem likely that Archie Senior travelled to Canada early 1902 at the latest.
Although you say he travelled to Canada in 1898 this would appear to be his journey dated 4th July 1902. Once settled and working Sarah and Archie followed him out in 1905. The 1911 census would be more accurate in that it gives his immigration year as 1901.
Passenger Lists leaving UK 1890-1960 Transcription

Archie attested to the CEF in Edmonton, Alberta in 1915 whilst Sarah at this time is recorded as living in Toronto - the other side of the Country.
Perhaps he had once again gone on ahead looking for work and there met Grace and set up another family. There may have been no marriage as he wasn't free to do so, but for appearances they said they were.
For Sarah and Archie to have received an allowance from the Army he would have to have declared his marriage to her (Sarah)
On his return to Canada post WW1 he gives the address for any monies to go to as Fresno, USA - where Sarah (and Archie) went to her F-in-Law after crossing the border in 1918.
So that seems to tie up that pairing. At some point after this it would seem the family emigrate to NZ and are found in Auckland by 1938 at the latest.
What information would the death certificates yield?

There are 2 listings on the Canadian passenger lists, one for Arch'd Cupples born abt. 1880, arriving 1902, the other for Arch Cuples born abt. 1879, arriving 1904. In both cases he's a tailor born County Down and heading for Winnipeg.

In the meantimes this looks to be Father and family in 1911 ??

Which is odd as the family travel 1/11/1913 from Liverpool to New York saying they intend to reside in USA - BUT David 56 is listed as a Jeweller. With him are Margaret 56, Maud 18, May 16 and Lillie 14 so looks to be same family. The census also has them as Baptist, but Archie says he is Presbyterian, quite a difference.

PM from Louise
I have come to the conclusion that they never married., as you have. My Grandmother never spoke of him except that he died when my mother was very young. it would be nice to confirm one way or the other but I guess this is not possible. I will keep checking but thank you for all you and the others have done
Regards Louise Tayler

I have been looking at the arrival in Canada of Grace Hamilton McLean and find she travelled on the Ionian July 1911 with her sister Mrs John Watson and child Willie Watson ....I believe the sisters name was "Sarah" .she gave her address as 6**8 Howe St Vancouver (cant quite make number out)...her husband was a Carpenter also acompanying her was a Finlay Watson..Possible Bro.in.Law. Vermont Border Crossing shows Grace H Mclean to be a tailoress and her fare was paid by Archie Cupples.previous address shows Chilliwack so don't know if that meant Grace had been earlier to Canada or if it refers to Sister...she certainly must have known Archie prior to 1911 for him to pay her fare.it may be worth checking out her Sisters details. Is it possible that Archie was Scottish and not Irish....I cannot find an Arthur Archibald at all.

Hello, I understand that My grandmother came to Canada with her sister Sarah Orr Watson and Sarah's son William. I don't think she came before that. She did reside in Chilliwack at some time. As for my great Aunt I don't think she came before either.
I have always been told my Grandfather was Irish and this is also stated on my mother's birth certificate. Like yourself I can't find an Arthur Archibald Cupples at all.
As my Grandmother never spoke of Archie and my Mother never knew him as she was told he died when she was very young., this is a mystery to me.
Thank you for your help Regards Louise
