Is there anyone on Genes that knows of my grandfather Albert Victor Crowton. He left the family home in 1931, I have found him in the 1939 census, He then disappears without trace, I have searched on and off for several years but have been unable to find out what happened to him. If anyone could help me I would be over the moon.

Regards Jenny.

Have you looked in search member trees for his name?

You'll need his birth year and birthplace to check for matches

Royal Artillery attestations 1883-1942 Transcription

First name(s) Albert
Last name Crowton
Age -
Birth year -
Birth place -
Attestation year 1942
Service number 1152178
Former service number -

There are 3 columns on the page -

The first gives the Service No. and the second the name - surname first and then first name.

The last column is headed " Transfers to other corps or cause of becoming non-effective and record of re-enlistment (if any) (Including date)"

Here has been written 167.46 and then 2 and something unclear. Looking at other entries on the page I would assume it is the date - 16.7.(19)46 and 2T (whatever that means) ?? Territorials/Reserves

Looking at the image again there are some other numbers and words that I think are attached to his record. The last has something (?) age limit.

The other bits are 073/8 C.D. and QDOH 290/1

Was just about to add that in Kath - I had originally discounted as there is a line between his name and those entries, but each person has the same sort of thing.

I think it says Dis. age limit - i.e. discharged at age limit.

The couple living with him in 1939 seem to be related to him. Ivy's maiden name is Crowson but sadly she seems to have died childless in 1948 so that doesn't help.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 22 May 2018 23:33

After searching online I think the C.D. might stand for Civil Defence. I can't find anything about QDOH.

Thanks Kathleen and greyghost, was hoping that it may give a bit more information that would proove it was our man, or not so we could at least rule it out. x

Discharged on 08/07/1916 - permanantly unfit for service due to (what looks to be - Valoulav Disease) that he had had since he was 12yrs old.

.............so army record could very well be him?

It would be 'valvular disease' which is a heart defect.

Thank you all for the information that you have kindly supplied, did not expect such a quick response. ErikaH you have given the 1939 census details with the date 1954 do you know if this is the date of his death ? as I have searched everywhere I know of to find out if he remarried, or left the country. Have spent years on and off trying to find his death but he seems to have disappeared with out trace. My dad was only 3 when his dad left and sadly died without ever finding out what happened to him.

Kind Regards,
Jenny.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 25 May 2018 12:26

The 195 4 isn't a date. The 195 is the schedule number on the page and the 4 indicates that Albert is number four in the list of people in that household.
