You mean James & Jane? (not James and Elizabeth?)
|
Still can't see them in 1871 as Gallagher, or Lizzie as Russell.
Maybe they were taken by Irish relatives.
|
Hi Janes father James coil Labourer is still around I will see if I can find him in a census.

Probably nothing to do with it, as we don't know of children Patrick and Jean, but here are children of those names boarding with a Jean Russell. I don't see their births.
Patrick Gallacher in the 1871 Scotland Census Name: Patrick Gallacher Age: 6 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865 Relationship: Boarder Gender: Male Where born: Dalzeel, Lanarkshire Registration Number: 625/2 Registration district: Holytown Civil Parish: Bothwell County: Lanarkshire Address: Old Highsethead ED: 2 Household schedule number: 141 LINE: 24 Roll: CSSCT1871_118 Household Members: Name Age Jean Russell 51 Janet Russell Endly 13 James Galloway 12 Hannah Galloway 9 Jean Gallacher 11 - Bothwell <<<<<<<<<< Patrick Gallacher 6 - <<<<<<<<<<<<<< [and other children with other surnames ]

??? some similarities to Lizzie's family-
James Gallocher in the 1861 Scotland Census
Name: James Gallocher Age: 39 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1822 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Jane Gallocher Gender: Male Where born: Ireland Registration Number: 625/2 Registration district: Holytown Civil Parish: Bothwell County: Lanarkshire Address: 22 Bairds Sq Occupation: Labourer Colliery ED: 10 Household schedule number: 18 LINE: 5 Roll: CSSCT1861_92 Household Members: Name Age James Gallocher 39 - Ireland Jane Gallocher 40 - Ireland James Gallocher 12 - Ireland (a couple of years "out" from James baptised Ardstraw) Bridget Gallocher 6 - Bothwell William Gallocher 4 - Bothwell - matches "our" William Jane Gallocher 2 - Bothwell John Gallocher 4 Mo - matches "our" John
Maybe the child Jane could be Jean with Jean Russell in 1871 ???

Hi Did you notice that James Gallagher and Jane Coil had a son born 25 Oct 1864 Dalziel, Lanark, Scotland

Yes, I posted Thomas's birth record on page 2 of this thread. (Or it may be his baptism in spite of the transcription saying "birth".)
|
This census record from FS doesn't seem to be on Ancestry. Can someone have a look at FMP, and see if this is Lizzie's brother, please?

I still think that is our Elizabeth Russell / Gallagher on the 1881 census in Bridgeton that I posted earlier. This makes me think that her brothers may be lurking on the census records using the surnames of their "adopted" parents.
|
You may be right, RG. I'm a little doubtful about her stated birthplace of New Monkland. It seems too definite a place-name to be an alternative or mistake for Bothwell/Holytown. Of course a later census did say she was born in Shotts, so who knows?!
There was an Elizabeth Russell born in New Monkland in 1860.
Elizabeth Russell Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950 birth: 8 March 1860 NEW MONKLAND, LANARK, SCOTLAND father: Robert Russell mother: Janet Norton
She's with her parents and siblings in 1871, but not in 1881.
|
Hmm. It way be that Elizabeth Russell then but bit of a coincidence that she was in Bridgeton and had the same occupation as our Elizabeth.
I wonder if the Poor Relief records for that part of Lanarkshire have survived. I think the Mitchell Library have some and they are indexed. Someone must have taken the children in when they were orphaned in 1866.

Apologies if already posted, I've been out all day. Perhaps one of these could be our Elizabeth? (not that it helps!):

Age out, but only census record I could find (on FMP) that suggested 'adopted daughter' under Russell or Gallagher:

The 1881 Shettleston one is a possibility AustinQ as it's not too far from Bridgeton where "our" Elizabeth married David Allan in 1882. I think the Mearns one is a bit too far away. Maybe we should follow up that Agnes Russell?
|
That Agnes's maiden name was Hall so that doesn't help any.
|
I still think the 1881 census that I posted on page 1 is our Elizabeth. I know the birthplace isn't accurate but that address is Main Strett. When Elizabeth married in 1882 her address was John Street (now called Tullis Street) which is just off Main Street. Let me see if I can find David Allen in 1881.
|
What details were given for David Allan on the marriage cert?
Is this his death?:
ALLAN DAVID 45 1891 644/11 146 Hutchesontown
If so, he was born c1846.
The only unmarried David Allan who matches that in the 1881 census in Glasgow area is this one:
David Allan in the 1881 Scotland Census Name: David Allan Age: 35 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1846 Relationship: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Liverpool, Lanarkshire Registration Number: 644/12 Registration district: Gorbals Civil Parish: Glasgow Gorbals County: Lanarkshire Occupation: General Porter ED: 72 Household schedule number: 40 LINE: 7 Roll: cssct1881_248 Household Members: Name Age Joseph Brown 29 Bridget Brown 25 Catherine Brown 2 Eliza Brown 1 Mo David Allan 35
But that death could be another David Allan, born c1846, who was married to a Sarah, had children, lived in Hutchesontown, and died between 1881 and 1891.

Hi David Allan married Lizzie 1882 Bachelor, Ironmongers porter, parents Thomas (Coach Painter) and Mary McCourty / McCourtie.
