Do the children's marriage certs say if either parent was deceased or not?

Hi
1911 census Andrew Russell and wife Lizzie are living wife their children in Parkfoot Terrace, Dennyloanhead, Stirlingshire.

ArgyllGran Report 7 May 2018 19:05

In which case, if they continued living in that area, the Bonnybridge 1946 death for Elizabeth Baxter might be possible.
Bonnybridge and Dennyloanhead are right next to each other.

And Larbert's not far away.

Hi ArgyllGran

1946 death looks very good. Some interesting twists in the tail shown on this certificate.

Hi
Strange I do believe this is our Lizzie Baxter deceased widow of Andrew Baxter

but it gives her parents as James Gallagher and Jane Coyle, not James Russell and Jane Kyle as per two of Lizzie's wedding certificates

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 7 May 2018 20:31

Is that what it says - widow of Andrew Baxter?

I don't understand the Gallagher/Russell thing.

However -
Gallagher and Coyle are both Irish names - maybe they married there.
Or didn't marry.

Coyle is certainly a likely variation of Kyle, or vice versa.

This one maybe too early?

This one too early ?:

James Gallagher
in the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915
Name: James Gallagher
Baptism Age: 0
Event Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 1847
Baptism Date: 19 Mar 1847
Baptism Place: Ardstraw West, Tyrone, Ireland
Parish Variants: Ardstraw West and Castlederg, Castlederg

Mother: Jane Coyle .

I don't see that Bothwell family in 1861 - or any other census, for that matter.
Neither as Gallagher nor as Russell.

But anyway, they were born in Bothwell, not Shotts.

Ah -

but Holytown is/was in Bothwell parish:

Per Wikipedia:

One old description of the town from the 19th century from the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland by Francis H Groome, 1885 is as follows:

Holytown, a town in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, 1 mile E by N of Holytown Junction on the Caledonian railway, 5½ miles SSE of Coatbridge, and 11 ESE of Glasgow. Surrounded by a well-worked part of the Lanarkshire mineral-field, and partaking largely in the industry and traffic connected with the working of the same, it experienced considerable increase of prosperity from the opening of the Cleland and Midcalder railway (1866), in result partly of through traffic on that line and partly of junction-communication with Motherwell.

Hi
I cannot see where the Gallagher family connection joins with the Russell name

Ian

rootgatherer Report 8 May 2018 08:39

The only possibility that I can think of is that James Gallagher died and Jane remarried a Mr. Russell and Elizabeth took her stepfather's name.

It's just a pity that the family can't be found on the 1861 or 1871 census. Not seeing a possible death for Jane using any combination of Gallagher / Russell / Coyle / Kyle.

My gut feeling is that that is your Elizabeth Russell listed on the 1881 census in Bridgeton with the occupation of Domestic Servant but can't find any of the possible siblings posted by ArgyllGran.

It is always possible that Elizabeth's parents return to Ireland and passed away there and then Elizabeth returned to Scotland (this happened with my own grandmother).

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 May 2018 17:11

If Andrew was born c1861 as indicated in the 1901 census posted earlier, his death wasn't registered in Stirlingshire.

There were six deaths of Andrew Baxters (born 1861 +/-3) in 1911-26;

1912 Dennistoun, 1915 Woodside, 1916 Larkhall, 1917 Galashiels, and two in 1926 George Square.

What's Andrew's age at his marriage to Lizzie?

EDIT:

One of these might be his birth:

BAXTER
ANDREW
M
1859
489/ 124
Slamannan

BAXTER

Did your Baxters live at Longcroft, Dennyloanhead? A short paragraph in The Falkirk Herald in 1918 tells of Anrew Baxter being killed by a train 25 November in Boswell U.S.A. He had emigrated 6 years previously and his wife still lived in Dennyloanhead.

Hmm..... let me check that out. Maybe not yours as it says his son had been serving with the colours for some time but of course that may have been Thomas his stepson.

Certainly seems to be the correct death (even though an Andrew Baxter is listed on the valuation rolls at Parkfoot Terrace in 1920)

Kirkintilloch Gazette 11 January 1918

KILLED ABROAD
A telegram received by Mrs Baxter, Parkfoot Terrace last week intimated that her husband, Andrew Baxter, has been killed on the railway at Boswell, USA. Details are lacking. Deceased, who emigrated about six years ago, was a miner with the Banknock Coal Company. He had two sons and a daughter.
