The marriage to Ann Emson is the one that I have and the daughter Charlotte married and moved on having no children. Her husband was a farm labourer so I wonder if she took on the farmer or would it not have been left to a female ? More things to find out !

Thanks for all that. It becomes quite complicated when the names are either wrongly transcribed or indeed if there was a mistake back in the day.

It is a workhouse. John and Mary Adlington are the Master and Matron.

He didn't necessarily fall from grace. Many people ended up in the workhouse if they were elderly and had no one who could look after them. Workhouse infirmaries were just like our general hospitals - in fact many of them became general hospitals once the workhouse system finished.

I think the death you found was quite possibly him.

I have a Charles Siggs listed as an inmate in Edmonton 1861, could be a workhouse ? I can’t find a death but have found a Charles Seggs Edmonton 1868. Firstly I wonder if it,s the same person and secondly I’m slightly incredulous because I’m making an assumption that this is my relative born in 1790 to Matthew and Elizabeth Siggs from who he inherited a farm in Cambridge in 1826 . A fall from grace !
