I can only believe that it is an error in the index...and the only way to find out is to purchase the certificate

Well if that marriage cert names her father as George Rogers then you will know if it the same lady somehow using the name Hopekinson.plus it will give her marital status at the time of marriage , i.e. Spinster .widow etc
I really would be inclined to get that marriage cert
By the way the release of the 1921 census is in question .it was shelved through lack of money to do the transcriptions

Hi Shirley
We do not have the marriage certificate unfortunately only the records in BDM 1904 and as such we have no parental names at this time to confirm. Richard Goodacre son of Hilda M Goodcare 1909 is the only surviving Goodacre family member we have any contact with at this time and he is in NZ .
The 2021 Census will hopefully assist in some respects however this is 3 years away.
As you say if it is Rogers, Edith Elizabeth in the 1901 census then who is Edith Elizabeth Hopekinson in the marriage in 1904. I wonder if this is a written or typing and or data entry error??? Can happen as you know.
Family from word of mouth say it it Rodgers which corresponds to the death certificate of Hilda. Unfortunately there is only 1 person still alive today Richard with any information and his is quite vague on what he has.
We will work on other siblings of Edith Elizabeth and their families and hope some contact can be made and to shed some light on the situation. Siblings have been identified along with their spouses and in some cases their children.
Cheers David

So have you got that 1904 marriage certificate to see who she names as her father
I saw she was still Rogers on the1901 census so didn't think it was the same lady as it was a small window to remarry 1904 as Hopekinson
Plus I did look for a marriage for her from 1901 to 1904 and none came up

Hi Chris
Happy Easter To All.
Yes the father is the dilemma!
The marriage details in 1904 of create the confusion whether the maiden name is Rogers or Hopekinson.
Marriages Mar 1904 Goodacre Edward Birmingham 6d 172 Hopekinson Edith E Birmingham 6d 172
Investigating if Hopekinson may have been a married name from a previous marriage however the age and window as indicated by Jude makes this look unlikely but not impossible.
At this stage nothing has come to light.

Hi All
Greetings from Australia and thank you for all your quick responses.
I can confirm the following.
1 Edward was married twice. Julia Russell his first wife died in 1901 during childbirth. Julia is my cousins great grandmother. Norman and Elsie are from this marriage.
2 Edward then married again in 1904 as discussed above to Edith Elizabeth.
3 Hilda Marriane Goodacre died in NZ where she married late in life and we do have the copy of the death certificate which clearly indicates that Rogers was her mothers maiden name.
4 I do also lean towards Edith Elizabeth Rogers born in Newcastle Under Lyme 1879.
Cheers David

Sarah was with Edith E in 1901 as a widow and still as Rogers as was Edith.
So there is a very small window for the name change before she married Edward in March quarter 1904!

Would say Edward was "married "twice
Marriages Jun 1896 Goodacre Edward Birmingham 6d 297 Russell Julia Birmingham 6d 297
So the elder children are from that marriage
Maybe Edith just lived with him and was known as his wife

Edith E Goodcare
The 1911 Census shows Edward Goodacre with Edith age 32 born in Newcastle Under Lyne and the children in Birmingham.
Edith Elizabeth Goodacre died in 1916 from what we believe during child birth. The birth records of Aice M Goodacre 1916 show her mothers maiden name was Rogers.
Marriage records located show that Edith E was married in 1904 to Edward Goodacre. Her maiden name was Hopekinson. This was Edward Goodacre's second marriage after the death of his first wife Julia in 1901.
Further to confuse we have the death certificate for Hilda Marriane Goodacre who died in 1989 which states her mothers maiden name was also Rogers.
I am unable to locate a marriage between an Edward Goodacre and an Edith E Rogers.
Any light on the above to assist would be greatly appreciated please? We need to confirm the maiden name of Edith Elizabeth. Was it Hopekinson or Rogers?? I have hit a brick wall or missing something simple.
Thanks
David
