Not to worry. I should have worked that out for myself! I obviously wasn't being systematic enough with my research. I should know better :-)

I don't think I helped!! I should've made my mistake clear when AG found the Tyne Street in Tynemouth

I wasn't sure if the articles were connected. I don't think they were as William and Elizabeth got married in Tynemouth. AG found the correct 36 Tyne Street in 1911 (the Longstaff residence).

The articles refer to 36 Tyne Street in Newcastle- not the correct Tyne Street.

Hmm, no Elizabeth then. Thanks for this. Maybe one of Thomas' sisters marries one of the Marshalls and lives in Tyne Street rather than it being our Elizabeth.

Oh well, it was worth a try. I'll await the second marriage certificate as I'm all out of theories now.

Austin Q - coming back to the text (pasted below) which you found, I wondered whether Elizabeth's mother might be the mother of Tom Daley? I think his mother is Bridget Daley, born Bridget Carroll in Glasgow in 1869. This would mean she would have been around 15 when she had Elizabeth to Luke Jacques, if this was true. However, I can't seem to link Bridget with Elizabeth either. Can't seem to find Bridget in the 1891 or 1901 censuses and by 1911 Elizabeth certainly isn't living with her.

36 Tyne Street - not sure if this is related? EDIT: address was Longstaff residence, see Ag's post below.

Newcastle Evening Chronicle 11 August 1915

An Uncanny Experience:

Writing to his sister, Mrs Marshall of 36 Tyne Street, Newcastle, Private Tom Daley says- The place where Dad was wounded is now described as 'hell on earth' as the Germans are using fire- liquid on us with disastrous results....

ROLL OF HONOUR
Casualties in Northern Regions

Private Edward Daley of 36 Tyne Street, Newcastle has been wounded in the left thigh and slightly gassed.

The postcards are wonderful. Yes they have dates, names and addresses so it’s easy to see who they’re from. He sends postcards of buildings he’s stationed near and tells her whether they have been destroyed or damaged. I love them.

It’s the old photos where I have no idea who many of them are. The ones where they haven’t written anything on the back (most of them). They’re mainly printed on card with the printers addresses on but not dates. There are also a few really good ones of ‘life’ - where they’ve been captured as people go about their business at home. One wonderful one of a group of staff with the name of where they work and the date. I had no idea my mother had these. She’d never looked at them since getting them from her mother’s house when she died and can’t help with any info unfortunately. But they’re lovely to see, just to get a feel for the era.

There are also lots of postcards of soldiers with very religious themes.

I have scanned my photos (front and back)- I keep them on a stick. Many of them were getting quite fragile and unless you store them correctly they are likely to deteriorate more over time.

You might wish to try dating the photos. Subtle changes in photograph styles and women's clothing etc. can often determine an approximate decade- this might help to identify them (lots of information on by googling). Or looking for likenesses to people in photos that you do have information for. Oh- and always check the reverse of the photo- often photos can be identified by just first names or dates, or if it's a studio photo the address is often printed and can be useful to determine the area the person was at that time. Knowing the photos probably relate to your Mother's mother already narrows the search.

The postcard sounds intriguing- is there no way of identifying who it was from? What was the address, the date, the ladies name?
