Can anyone help me, I have traced my father's tree back to 1791c. I think they were Gypsies living in Ivy Lane Shoreditch London. Could anyone help me with finding more information of the family or of the gypsy community. Thank you Edith Owen

Perhaps you could give details of the 'gypsy' you're sure about & we could trace back to see if we agree. Many (pairs of) eyes are better than one!

All I am certain about is the Ashton family as above are my ancestors and they were gypsies from Ivy Lane in Shoreditch. Thanks again for your help Edith

(Not sure on things 'Gypsy' looking at occupations!, and from other queries we have dealt with on Romany/Traveller folks, they travelled round quite a bit!)
|
I’m wondering if the Romany site has just looked for occupations which ‘gypsies’ might have undertaken & made an assumption. A few of my relatives are listed on census as Hawkers or Dealers & were definitely not Romany Gypsies!
Edith, what evidence do you have that your Ashton’s were Gypsies? Could you have picked up on the wrong family?
|
Information I have has come from my father when he was alive and confirmed by other family members. I have also spoken to some Romany gypsies who have told me the Ashton family split in the past and one of them moved to Shoreditch on a site in Ivy Lane. My grandfather was born in Shoreditch and all the evidence of names and places ties up with the above records. Thank you for all the help, some of the information you have found on other family members I didn't have. Edith

A copy of the DC for the William Ashton who died in 1857 is on Ancestry

Although there were several William Ashton's born within a few years of each other, could this be his baptism?
William Ashton Record Type: Baptism Baptism Date: 16 May 1792 Baptism Place: St Giles in the Fields, Holborn, Camden, England Father: John Ashton Mother: Mary Ashton
Unfortunately the image is just a list of names & dates with no indications of occupations.
