(thankyou AG, good to know these things, lol)

I don't see her birth, however.

She's Rose Anne in 1871 and at marriage; Rose Ann in 1861; Rosina in 1851.
Birth varies 1842-44, but always in Greenock.

No mother present in 1851 or 1871 - unless the transcription is wrong.
1861 there's a wife Charlett, from Ireland.

1851 - father is a fish hawker from Ireland.
1861: railway labourer, Ireland.
1871: railway official, Ireland
Coming up in the world as time goes on.

Rose Ann's marriage again, with SP ref nos., if you want to have a look, Christopher.

NIMMO
ROSE ANN
TAYLOR
JAMES
1873
564/2 14
Greenock East

It'll cost you 6 credits to view the image.

Yes, it would give names of both parents, including mms, plus father's occupation, and whether they were deceased or not.

She married only a fortnight after her father died.

(apologies, just switched on, been shopping!)

Chris :)

(as you're here AG, lol, would that Marriage Cert. of Rose Nimmo in 1873, give anything on name of her Mother? (me, not knowing on things Scottish Certs, lol)

(trying to find name of her Mother, to see if she was a 'Semple', which made Charles M'Ewen (and it's variants!) the Brother in Law of Thomas Nimmo)

https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/22558317

(Thomas Nimmo is named on above 1857 Death Cert. of Charles)

Re the reference to Catherine Semple -
Chris gave the link in the same post.

However, although she had a spirit-dealing business there, it doesn't mean she lived there.

No sign of her in Greenock in 1851 census, as far as I can see.

Final question Chris Ho before i do some proper work

Where did you get the reference to Catherine Semple

Christopher

Christopher Report 27 Feb 2018 09:54

And just for clarity - because I am dim:

1. You have found McEwan - Semple and Nimmo in close proximity (The Vennel)
2. If i find Nmmo's daughter marriage certificate it may reveal whether her mother was a Semple and therefore that starts to firm up a link

Finally, how did a brother in law (Thomas Nimmo) know the details of his dead brother in laws parents - by being intricately linked to the family of course

Christopher

Christopher Report 27 Feb 2018 09:51

Hi Chris Ho - are those references from census or posts office

Christopher

Christopher Report 27 Feb 2018 09:39

Bit to absorb here - but you have actually created a chink in the locked door. The Vennel is the common link and all the numbers have close proximity. I need a piece of paper and a towel for my head - this does start to add up if we have a Semple in proximity doing spirit dealing (she may have been a worker). Yes Semple is a name.

Chris Ho :)

Chris Ho :) Report 27 Feb 2018 07:15

So was the first wife of Thomas Nimmo, a Semple (if that is surname)?...

Would the Marriage Cert. of his Daughter give a clue to her Mother?...(not sure on Scot. Certs.)

You might have to go 'round the houses' a bit, to get there!...(back to Bridget, that is!)

Chris :)

(if you see an actual Scot. Census image, you should get Birthplace in Ireland, which should help perhaps, might just have to spend some pennies, lol)

https://digital.nls.uk/directories/browse/

(Scottish Post Office Directories)

(might find addresses on above)

(1860-61 has Thomas Nimmo,9, Market St)

(1849-50 has M'Ewan, Charles, bellhanger and gas fitter, 12 Vennel. notes further down, M'Ewan, Miss Mary, draper, 12, Vennel)

(that was his occ. on Death Cert.)

(1851-2, notes, Semple, Miss Catherine, spirit dealer, 10, Vennel)

(1841-42 M'Ewen, Mary, spirit dealer, 12 Vennel. M'Ewen, Mrs. cloth shop, 9, Vennel)

(seeing below, it was a shop)

13 December 1859 - Greenock Telegraph and Clyde Shipping Gazette

Mary Devine, a girl of 11 years of age, pled guilty to a charge of stealing from the shop of Anne Cunningham, 10 Vennel, a pint and a quart bottle.
