There is nothing to say on the 1911 that the Mary Campell born c1856 is related to the Lynns. The Lynns are just recorded as boarders. The Lynns are Presbyterian, and Mary and her son Patrick are RC.

This is the marriage of John Lynn and Margaret Campell. Margaret's father listed as William.

Marriage:

Name John Lynn
Birth Date 1842
Age 23
Spouse's Name Margaret Campbell
Spouse's Birth Date 1842
Spouse's Age 23
Event Date 30 Jun 1865
Event Place Belfast, Belfast, Antrim, Ireland
Father's Name John Lynn
Spouse's Father's Name William Campbell
Marital Status Single
Spouse's Marital Status Single
------------------------------

The Mary living with the Lynns in 1911 is here in 1901- her maiden name was Mcleod and she was married to William Campbell:

Ireland Census 1901 Transcription
Townland/Street Mill Lane
District electoral division Larne
County Antrim

Mary Campbell Head of Family Married 44 1857 Antrim
Colin Campbell Son Single 15 1886 Antrim
Patrick Campbell Son - 13 1888 Antrim
Mary Campbell Daughter Single 19 1882 Antrim
--------------------------

I thought they could be related if William Campell was the brother of Margaret Lynn nee Campbell- however, Margaret's father is recorded as William on her Marriage, but when WIlliam Campbell married Mary Mcleod in 1876, he lists his father as John Campbell.

Its looking possible that there are 2 Mary Campbells, unrelated. I wish I could do what you do, I would be on it 24/7. I nearly am now.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 11 Feb 2018 09:37

Lol- I've got things to do as well! I couldn't sleep last night for thinking about this family.

The Campells are going to be difficult to sort. There are quite a few Mary's born in Antrim c1866 with father William! I'm not starting on them- don't think my brain can take it today :)

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 11 Feb 2018 09:39

Yes Deborah, they certainly look to be different people and it seems, from different branches of Campbells (Or at least they are not closely related).

Deborah Report 11 Feb 2018 10:18

This may be nothing, but you did say any little snippett may help, but my Grandmother May Lynn, wife of J C L Lynn (who was son of Mary Lynn) forbid any of us from researching the 'Lynn' family. She was livid with her daughter Doreen Crosby nee Lynn ( my dads sister) for trying to so it was left. No one argued with her.

On 1st Feb 'greyghost' very kindly gave me the details of Mary Lynns burial, we didnt even know where she was buried. I wrote to the cemetery and they gave me the details of her grave. She was buried at Hampton cemetery. My parents were forbidden to go to the funeral, my Dads Mum bought my Dad a black tie and said you can wear that and thats all. I got a letter back from Hampton Cemetery and found out that she was buried in an unpurchased unmarked grave with 6 others. My grandparents were not that short of money, I think it was just nasty on Grandmothers part. ( I know its all supposition).

We were all so upset to hear that and my Mum is talking about having the body exhumed to give her a proper burial.

Its still my opinion that, yes there maybe some sort of 'skeleton' here, but we just think she had a very unfortunate time with her life, she lost her 9 month old baby, then her husband, and maybe she was hospitalised or something, for what in those days would have probably been thought of as 'going crazy'. Something May Lynn would have thought of as very distastefull, and should be swept under the carpet.

You see the thing that is driving me is that my Dad spent his whole life thinking all he had on the Lynn side of the family were his Mum, Dad and sister, and us of course, thats me, Mum and my brother.

If this is our Mary Lynn, then she had many siblings, which means that there may be other children and family members out there we never knew about.

This is why I got all our DNA done, which I did through Ancestry.com. and myself and Dad came up with a match, which I found yesterday, with a lady called Lynne who lives in Canada. I put the names Sinclair and Orr in, and she has them in her tree. Orr is very unusual, I know its a long shot, but could it be the bit that links it to the Mary Lynn you are following.

Deborah Report 11 Feb 2018 10:54

I have had another thought, it goes back to the reason I wrote to you in the first place.

We have Mary Lynn on the 1901 census. Then she is not on the 1911 census. We couldnt find her anywhere so I wrote to you.

Then ; greyghost post 1st feb 17.03 their baby William Lester Lynn died, aged 9 months, Census also shows there were 3 children, 2 died.

Maybe this made my Grandmother ill and she was 'put' somewhere to get well. It would be enough to.

Could there be a clue in where the 9 month old child was buried and also the details of the other child. I dont have this information.

May explain her absence on the 1911 census.

In 1913 her husband William Lester died at Fulham infermary, she was not the informant on the death certificate, it was one of the hospital staff.

We know she was in London, Fulham at JCL Lynn and May Lynn marriage. I have the certificate. in 1929.

Oh dear, his Mum Mary Lynn, the one we are really looking for was buried in an unmarked grave along with 6 others. This is so sad.

I will write to them and see what I can find out, they were probably so poor they couldnt afford a head stone.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 12 Feb 2018 09:08

Yet in 1905 and 1907, John and Margaret Lynn, William's parents, were both buried with a large headstone in McGarel Cemetery Larne.

Belfast Weekly News 31 January 1907
LYNN- January 23 after a lingering illness, at Larne Infirmary, Margaret Lynn, wife of the late John Lynn, Barnhill.
-------------------------------------------------------

Looking at the papers, John had been a successful painter - obtaining a large contract to paint the First Presbyterian Church in Larne in 1898.

Ballymena Weekly Telegraph 11 June 1898
"...The contract for painting was entrusted to John Lynn of Barnhill, Larne, painter and decorator, who has by this artistic piece of work, won for himself fresh laurels in his profession, Viewed as a whole for good taste and workmanship, the work has been carried out in a faultless manner, and it is satisfactory to note that not the slightest accident occurred during the progress of the work..."
---------------------------------------------

Right up until 1904 (the year before his death he placed various adverts wanting skilled paperhangers and and painters and also advertising for apprentices- giving the impression his business was doing well.

So why didn't William take over the business? Did he not have a head for business? Was he too ill to take on work? What happened to make them up sticks and move to England?

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 12 Feb 2018 09:59

Just out of interest Deborah, what was John C L Lynn's address when he married in 1929?

At the moment I only see him on the electoral registers from 1933- at 7 Barker Street, Kensington (with Wife, May).

In 1934 Mary is also living with them at 7 Barker Street.

Deborah

Deborah Report 12 Feb 2018 10:09

Just getting you the postcode

Deborah

Deborah Report 12 Feb 2018 10:16

We always thought they were all painters. Maybe he was too ill to do such manual work.

The address they were at, and as far as I know (but I can check it if you need it) from early 1930's is

21 Homefarm Road
Hanwell
London
W7 1NR

Your last post will be solid gold for my Dads ears.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 12 Feb 2018 10:24

Morning Deborah,

21 Homefarm Road is where they were living from about 1938. I wanted to know if there was an address on John's marriage certificate in 1929?

If you don't have access to the papers I can send you the article re the church- it details all the decorative painting that was done.

Deborah

Deborah Report 12 Feb 2018 10:25

Got this from my cousin, William Lester Lynn, copy of entry of death, died 6th June 1913, address 42 Turneville Road, Fulham, London, W4, cause of death cardiac failure and something else, illegible.

I do believe that a lot of Irish went to Wales/USA and London at the beginning of the century because of a potatoe blight, maybe they all became very poor, and those with a skill had to move because the people who lived in Ireland became very poor, I do know that is documented, there was a programme on TV about it.

I have their marriage cert right here,

JCL Lynn 287 Lille Road, Fulham (think it says Lille)
