I wonder if when Robert and Jane married in Ireland they came to Preston then emigrated to America and had further children over there then came back home to Preston leaving Robert and Lewis in America.
Maybe Robert, Lewis and Avelina (Evelina) were born in America.

There is an Eveline Britton born 1877 on the Lancashire BMD but her mother’s maiden name is Trimple. If Robert and Lewis were scholars in U.S.A why would they be on the 1881 census and why would Lewis be on the 1891 census if he was a labourer in America?

Can’t find any records of the two boys emigrating.

Thank you for that Choccy but I am confused. I realise I couldn’t find the marriage because it was in Ireland. That bit I understand.

Where Avelina comes from I don’t know as she’s not listed on the Lancashire b.m.d Also can’t find a birth for Robert 1871 and Lewis 1873. Can’t undersand what they are doing in America. Could they be just relatives and not actually children of Robert and Jane? I know a lot of Irish people emigrated to America.

Is it possible for someone to look at the census for 1871 and 1891.

With the above information I’ve been able to go further back. William Britton was born 1867 in Preston Lancashire. His mother was nee Scott. He has siblings Richard 1863 Thomas 1865, William himself 1867 and Charles 1875 but I can’t find a marriage for the parents. I presume it would be before 1863. Any help would be appreciated.

Choccy also was right with the 1939 register. He still lived there when he died in 1983.

That’s brilliant Andy. It would seem that he was illegitimate and when his mother married he took over the surname of his stepfather or maybe hie was his father and the parents married after his birth. That will be something I will never know.

Maybe his mother living with them?

I wondered if anyone can help with any birth records for the above. I think he was born in 1908 and died in Preston Lancashire 1983. It was understood that he was adopted but by whom and when isn’t very clear. This might not even be his original name. The only William Joseph Britton I can find was born in 1906 in Bethnal Green.
William married Martha Kay in 1938 at Preston.

Any help would be appreciated.
