Well there you go Laird. Wonder if it's an Irish thing? My ggg grandfather gave me a merry dance too and I had to piece all the bits together. He too remarried and claimed to be a bachelor. When he died, just a few years later, his very young widow knocked more than 20yrs off his age. The 2 docs combined made him look like a completely different person.
However, he left an extremely substantial will He also named his benefactors and their relationship to him.
They included his 25yr old, married GRAND DAUGHTER and her family. Her husband was even an executor of this will.
How could a man of 50yrs , who married as a bachelor just a few years before, be the grandfather of a 25yr old? How could he omit his other two grandchildren? He raised them from an early age along with their sister, who was the included grand daughter !

My general feeling is that he wasn't a WW1 death- If that was the case, then Mary surely would have married when her first child with Mr Nelson was due- as it was she didn't marry Richard Nelson until 1928.

Great news on those certificates.
What was the date of birth on Mary Angela's birth certificate Laird?
Have you found her on the 1939 register?

I just uploaded Mary Angela Smith birth certificate, it was 21st May 1915 at 36 Alexander Road, Newport. Fathers occupation Dock Labourer.....starting to see some maritime feel here with this lot :-) I would say it looks unlikely that Daniel Smith was in the army based on the birth period of Angela......it's possible he was already engaged in essential war effort work so would not likely have been permitted to enlist.
The connection between Daniel Smith and Richard Henry Nelson both having the same trade can not be a coincidence. You can't help but wonder if there was some sort of intrigue here and Richard whisked off Mary Frances Smith to Stockton. I assume he must have remarried and at some point therefore needed to officially divorce Mary Frances.

On 26 Jan, Eringobragh noticed something that we all seem to have missed.
Laird obtained a copy of Mary France's birth cert via Rootsireland and yet, it has been annotated with both of her marriages. I did wonder how the info made it's way onto her birth cert. Last night the penny dropped. DUH! I should have realised sooner, especially because I am currently going through the SAME process!
As my mum was born in Ireland, I have automatic rights to become an Irish Citizen and me and my children are all currently going though the application process for Irish Passport purposes
This requires an original copy of my Mum's birth cert x4 ( one for each of us) plus the same for her Scottish marriage and, as she has since passed away, we also each require an original copy of her Death Cert Also originals of of our own Births and Marriages It cost a small fortune to order all of the docs required. ( total of 17 original certs from Ireland and Scotland) All of this is to be sent with our applications
First thing that happens... My birth will retrospectively be placed on the Irish Foreign Register (60yrs late LOL) This produces an Irish Birth certificate. At this point I will have become an Irish Citizen with the right to live and work in ROI My Mum's birth cert will be UPDATED to include her Scottish marriage info Thus.. creating a paper trail that leads from my Scottish birth, back to my Mum's Irish birth.
Although I am doing this in one process, I now wish to apply for an Irish Passport The new Irish BC is used in my passport application. ( it will be interesting to see exactly what info my new BC will contain)
Therefore, Somewhere in the past, a child or grandchild of Mary Frances has had their English/Welsh birth placed on the Irish Foreign Register. As both marriages are showing on her BC, I guess this was done after she married for the second time
Its not impossible, but highly unlikely that Mary Frances made the applications herself and registered all of her children's births on the Foreign Register.
NB: Great grandchildren of a person born in Ireland do not have rights to Irish citizenship unless... their own parent's birth was placed on the register BEFORE the child was born. IE A great grandchild child born before the parent was placed on the register does not have rights to Irish Citizenship A chid born after, does have the right.
All of our docs were ordered over a week ago and I expect them to be delivered any day now. We are in a rush. It takes a few months but would like it all completed before my eldest, married daughter has a child of her own.
My children want to retain EU Citizen rights An Irish Passport gives them that right

So I couldn't use the fact that my great grandmother Mary Frances Fleming was Irish to apply for an Irish passport?

That's correct Laird.. Only children and grandchildren born outside of Ireland can have Citizenship and can apply for an ROI passport if they wish one
Unless.... your own mother's birth ( she was a grandchild) was already placed on the Foreign Reigister BEFORE you were born, you do not qualify.
That's why we are in a rush. My daughter is planning to have a family of her own. If her name is not on the Reigister before a birth, the child has no rights
I have seen late 20th century births appearing on the Irish Index for a few of my relatives. I have their Scottish Birth certs but now I understand why they are also on the Irish Index My families with Scots born children returned to Ireland in the 1930/40s where these births were retrospectively placed on the Foreign Register. It gave them the rights to live and work in ROI

the 1911 census states that Minnie (Mary) had 3 children with just one still living... Mary Frances (Fanny) so as we know one was Jeremiah who died a year after his birth....logically this is the 3rd child.
