Ely died late 1970s -1980`s ? .Edith died 2008 ..looking for their dates of emigration, marriage and also death of T. H.(Ely ) Ellis.

When searching for people, initials are not usually helpful. Do you know what the 'T.H.' stand for?

If those were his official names, that is what would be shown in records, for instance in South African national archives if there is a record relating to his estate.

Also, I read his name, as you wrote it - T.H. (Ely) Ellis -- as meaning that he was called Ely Ellis. But is Ely his official surname and he used the name Ellis?

I only know the initials of his offical first names were T. H. and surname Ellis. (initials being better than nothing I thought)

If you only knew how many Thomas Henry Ellis-s alone there were in the world ... :-)

If he died in South Africa we would expect there to be a record in archives relating to his estate, which would name his surviving spouse

Edith's death would be too late for any records to show there.

But ... a search via google for

turned up two results that are unfortunately behind a paywall at the site - to download the document where the term appears, a membership is required.

These would most probably be references to her estate, under the "Administration of Estates Acts Notices" heading in the table of contents of the two volumes of the gazette.


I regoogled

and found a summary of the notice in the 6 March 2009 issue of the gazette:

so that is all that is shown in the gazette, apparently.

The 1926 date does appear to be her birthdate, at least as reported when she died.
