Adding for info, the new GRO search facility (free)
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp
You can search for births by father's and mother's surnames
Annoyingly, only with in a 5-year range for each search, and specifying sex of child each time ... so search for 1895 +/-2 male, then female, then 1900 +/- 2 male, then female ... in this case they would likely only have had children by 1897, if separated in May 1896.
Anyway, this is a way to find children who did not survive to a census.

Lancashire Evening Post - Wednesday 14 April 1897
EXTRAORDINARY CLAIM BY A HUSBAND.—At Bacup County Court yesterday, before his Honor Judge Coventry. Jonathan Papworth, market sales man, Edgesideholme, sued his wife for £5O, value of furniture and damage for detention. The parties were married in 1894 and separated in May last. The house had been in the wife’s name, as plaintiff had obtained an administration order. The goods sought to be recovered included a set of false teeth, two family Bibles, communion service, prayer and hymn books, eight days clock, stuffed squirrel under glass shade, and life insurance policy. For the wife, it stated that she had £200 in her own right when married, and that this had all been squandered by her husband, and that the furniture and the policy had been assigned to her in consideration of money lent.—His Honour gave a verdict for the wife, except as regarded the stuffed squirrel and an old clothes box which were alleged to belong to other members of the family, and ordered the husband to pay the costs of the action. ----------------------------
I wonder where the squirrel is now? :-D
