Elizabeth Conroy is my foster mothers great grandmother b. 1861-1941 her brother is Michael J Conroy - Michael J Conroy is the son of Mary Neaham and Thomas Conroy - I hope this goes some way to clearing up how the line is.. I have information proving this line so know that it is correct. Many thanks in advance

I've sent a message to Mark explaining the confusion.

I'm hoping he'll get back to us with more details as to how he got to Thomas and Mary. I'm keen to know who he descends from. It seems quite a few trees on ancestry have made the assumptions on both these families that are incorrect.

Mark, it all depends on who you are actually researching and how you got back to them.

One Thomas had partner Mary Cawfield (and variations), the other Thomas had partner Mary Ball.

(I suspect that Mary Ball's mother, Ann, married again to surname Neaham/ Meehan/ Needham/ Newham/ Neehern - or variation!)

Looks like Timothy married again, and travelled to US- death confirms his mother's maiden name:

This is the nearest I can see for a death for Ann Neaham , assuming she was living with the family permanently as at 1881 census, and not just visiting. But it's definitely iffy!:

Mark, where did you get the info that Michael was born in Ditton, or that Mary Neaham was his mother?

I can't see births for any Conroy / Neaham children in the 1850's - 70's in the Prescot reg district.

The Mary in the 1861 census was a Canfield / Cawfield, not a Neaham.

There's a tree on Ancestry showing Thomas Conroy and Mary Neaham with various children - but none of their births check out per GRO website.
The Canfield ones do, but not otherwise.

That tree claims the 1861 and 1881 (the one posted by Pam) families are the same, and also shows 1891:

In 1901 Mary's on her own in Ditton, widowed, with a couple of boarders.


The 1881 census does show Ann Neaham as Thomas's mother-in-law, but that's the only sign of the name.

I wonder if Ann had previously been married to a Canfield?
