Thank you for all responses. I am satisfied now that Ernest Charles and Ernest Lewis are one and the same, especially after seeing the Lewis family link. Edward E Ewbank

Hi Edward,
Quote from above posted by ArgyallGran
Emily would be the "mother" he knew best, possibly from a very young age, so he may have wanted to acknowledge her by taking her name.
seems likely, does the occupation of Ernest Lewis Ewbank on the marriage certificate in 1903 match with the 1901 census and that of his dad Thomas?

Thomas had yet another wife by 1901. Ernest's age is edging nearer to 1879!

Thank you Chris. I am Edward Ernest Ewbank. None of the above is new to me except the name Ernest Charles Lewis Ewbank. I have a copy of the birth certificate of Ernest Charles Ewbank (1876) to Thomas Charles Ewbank, and census records of Ernest Lewis Ewbank (b~1878/79 by deduction of his age at the time of census), and the marriage certificate of Ernest Lewis Ewbank (to my grandmother) in 1903 with stated age of 24. I have not seen any document showing the name Ernest Charles Lewis Ewbank.. However, I do know that Ernest Lewis was my grandfather.

On that 1891 census Kate is recorded as Stepdaughter but Ernest is recorded as SON so looks like he was definately Thomas Ewbank's son born Ernest Charles.

ArgyllGran,
The marriage was in 1885 so Thomas & Emily were already married by 1891 census.

Is this the family in 1891, with Emily calling herself Ewbank prior to marriage?

I have a problem identifying my grandfather. My supposed great grandfather Thomas Charles Ewbank was the father of Ernest Charles Ewbank born 25/2/1876 (birth certificate), who seems to have morphed into Ernest Lewis Ewbank, definitely my grandfather, born about 1879, and who died in Alexandria in 1918. There is no more mention of Ernest Charles in our family tree. I suspect that Ernest Lewis Ewbank was actually the son of Emily Lewis, Thomas Charles' second wife Emily Lewis, m. 1885. Which would mean, of course, that I am really a "Lewis". Can anyone throw any light on this?
