Hi all, this is a long shot but looking for info on The Union Estate St Lucia. Re the slave books I have names of owner William Thomas Todd he died before 1826 & his son Melcher Garner Todd, he died in 1866 plus 2 others John Goodman & Edward Lumley Woodyear.
Have tried the Government in St Lucia with no luck, many thanks Ian

Morning Chronicle - Wednesday 20 June 1855

This was an appeal against an decree or judgment of the Supreme Civil Court of Appeal of the island of St. Lucia, for dated the 5th day of November, 1853, and arose out of ami action brought in the Royal Court Of St. Lucia by the respondents as trustees under the marriage settlement of of Melcher Garner Todd and Marianne Emelis Frances Pryce, his wife, to recover from the defendants, Edward Lumley I Woodyear and Theresa Adhle Clara de Bosse de Bonrecuell, his wife, and the appellant, Charles de Brettes, the former as principal and the latter as surety, the amount of principal and interest of the second instalment of the purchase money or price of the 'Union Estate,' situate in the island, sold under a judicial sale by the respondent, John Goodman, for and on behalf of himself and his co-trustees, to Edward Lumley Woodyear and wife, by notarial deed duly executed and registered according to the law in force in the colony, bearing date the 7th day of January, 1852, with interest on the principal sum of £1,220 since the 18th day of of December, 1852, when the instalment became due and payable, with interest on the balance of the gross sum so sued for namely, on £61 from the day of the service of the petition. The substantial question raised by the appeal was, whether by the French law in force in St. Lucia, the appellant ,having by the above notarial deed become surety for both Edward Lumley Woodyear and his wife, through the agency of one Franrois Loustan, in their absence acting as their attorney, is discharged from the whole of his obligation as such surety by reason of the power of attorney under which he acted being confined to the husband alone, such procuration containing no authority from his wife. The Supreme Civil Court of Appeal was of opinion that the want of authority on the part of the wife, whilst it at once freed her from at all obligation as principal, and consequently the surety from any liability on her behalf, did not discharge the suretyship which had been lawfully and bona fide contracted for Woodyear, and decreed the appellant in the amount sued for. From this decree the present appeal was brought.
At the conclusion of the arguments, which were of a technical character, their Lordships confirmed the judgment of the courts below.

St Lucia:

The Union Estate, one of the finest, best installed, and most productive estates in the island, and which comprises upwards of 1,000 acres of land, of which 53 are in cane cultivation, has been knocked down this week at Marshall's sale for 5,5007. sterling. The purchaser is F. Loustan, Esq., as agent for Edward Lumley Woodyear, Esq., residing at Aix, in France.
