Railway Fatalaties. Late on Saturday night, the dead body of a man was found near Old Dalby Station, on the Midland Railway, between Nottingham and Melton Mowbray, and on examination it proved to be the body of a man named William Goodman, of Queen- street, Melton, an old servant of the company. It appears that on Saturday evening the deceased was instructed to proceed to the cutting at Old Dalby for the purpose of placing fog signals on the line. It is believed the man was knocked down by the express from Nottingham...
(Martha Goodman, a niece of deceased said her Uncle was over 65 years of age, she saw him alive about ten past seven, when he was at her home at Old Dalby, he left at half past seven, and was well and perfectly sober, he always stayed with her on Sundays. a verdict of accidental death was returned)

matches birth of Albert A Carter.
tangly but I'm not really helping with the question :-)

This just clarifies for us that his parents were not married, since he was registered in both surnames, and that his father was present or consented to the registration in his name.
Do you know anything else about the circumstances - for instance my question about whether Elizabeth was a domestic servant?
(I ask because my gr-grmother's first child was a result of a non-consensual event with the head of household's son in the household where she was a servant, and I don't think it was too rare a situation. In her case, the child was given the father's surname as a middle name, which was common, probably because there was no consent, or request for consent, to register with his surname.)
My findmypast sub has expired. The household in 1939 shows:
William J Brown 1887 Robert K Brown and 2 more people are on this record 3 more people who are officially closed
but I can't tweak it to show me Elizabeth - I only see one other birth to the marriage besides Robert, so the three closed records would be that child, William Goodman, and someone else, and presumably the two other older individuals would include Elizabeth.
I'm just wondering whether the William J Brown whom Elizabeth married was somehow the Goodman shown on the birth reg, using another surname for some reason.
What was his occupation, do you know?

and presumably his family is aware of his birth circumstances.
a coincidence presumably that the man his mother married a year later was a William J:

The John William Goodman identified by malyon in the 1891 census would be a good candidate
Name: John W Goodman Age: 22 Estimated birth year: abt 1869 Relation: Son Father's name: William Goodman Mother's name: Sarah Goodman Gender: Male Where born: Llanere, Radnorshire, Wales Civil Parish: Melton Mowbray Occupation: Ironmonger's Porter
... except is he likely to have had a child in 1927 when he was nearly 60 years old?
Perhaps he had a son ...
edit -- Oh, and except that the rest of your rootsweb query says:
'on looking at the 1881 and 1991 census there was a William Goodman and his son John William Goodman born 1869 living at 13 Queen Street ,in the 1901 census the parents are no longer alive ,the son John William Goodman was married and living in Bentley Street, ... John William subsequently died in September 1901,I searched for a birth of a John William Goodman for the whole of 1901 and 1902 with no success in Melton thinking that his wife was pregnant when he died and that she had a son that she had named after him,as it stands I dont know whether it was a massive coincidence that his Father had exactly the same name as the John William that lived a few doors away 26 years previously'
Always a really good idea to tell us everything you already know.
Do you know whether the child's mother was a domestic servant?
Should we assume that since it has been over a decade since the request AustinQ found, you have consulted the electoral register and it did not provide any help?

Can't find anything on the 1939 Register.
EDIT - Have now found 21 Queen Street in 1939 but at that time the occupier was Christopher Shaw, born 1879 and was a widower who was disabled in the war.
You could try contacting the library in Melton Mowbray and asking if they would check the electoral register for 1927, but at that time not too many people had the vote and the house may have been rented out so I don't know how successful this would be for you.

There really is no way of doing this, and there won't be in future. No such records were made. Imagine, 90 years from now, someone wanting to know the composition of your household in 2017. Unless you buried a time capsule and left directions to it ...
The ten-year census is pretty much all there will be.
1921 census (not yet available) 1931 census (English census completely destroyed by fire in 1942) 1939 register (available at findmypast)
The one thing you can do, since you have the address, is consult the electoral roll at the local library where it is held. That will show any adults at the address eligible to vote.
