Find Ancestors

Wondering if anyone can help me with a little conundrum I'm facing...

My ancestor Martha Tutty married a James Harry Bakes in York in 1889. We have the marriage certificate and it says her father is Thomas Tutty, a groom from York. We then got her birth certificate and sure enough the father is a Thomas Tutty, Groom and the mother is an Emma Mills. We have found all of the census' where the young Martha is living with her father Thomas, mother Emma and her 3 sisters in York.

The problem? The only record of a marriage for Thomas Tutty is to an Emma Richardson in 1865 and that's it....I've checked the birth certificates of all the siblings and 4 of them are to Emma Mills and one is to Emma Richardson. I can't seem to figure out if Emma Mills and Emma Richardson are actually the same person or if he's having kids to two different women! The timeline is as follows:

1835 - Thomas Tutty born in Howden
1865: Thomas Tutty marries Emma Richardson in York
1866: Emily Tutty born to Thomas Tutty and Emma MILLS in York
1869: Amelia Tutty born to Thomas Tutty and Emma MILLS in York
1870: Martha Tutty born to Thomas Tutty and Emma MILLS in York
1973: Mary Jane Tutty born to Thomas Tutty and Emma RICHARDSON in York
1874: John Henry Tutty born to Thomas Tutty and Emma MILLS in York

These children (other than the last who sadly didn't survive infacy) are all on the 1881 labelled as Thomas' daughters.

Who does Emma Richardson give as her father on the marriage certificate to Thomas Tutty?

I don't have the marriage certificate yet but I'm sure I've seen something somewhere where it lists her father as John Richardson...

Wondering about this birth? York covers Heslington as given as birth place in census, perhaps her mother married a Richardson and that was the name used on marriage cert?

Nyx, I've found that tonight as well and got very excited haha, but on Thomas Tutty's marriage to Emma Richardson it states the father as John Richardson...I'm not sure how this would tie in to Emma Mills born with a mother called Richardson?

I'm so confused!

They had John Mills in Keighley 11/8/1811 he married Mary Richardson born 1815 Heslington York parents George Richardson 1777-1858 and Ann Cook 1779-1862.

Can't find a marriage but this looks like why.

John Mills died in Keighley 15/1/1863
Probate states he was a bachelor and Ironfounder granted to Joseph Smith machine maker husband of Eleanor Smith half sister to John. Under £300

Eleanor Mills born 14/4/1825 to Thomas Mills and second wife Maria Hardwick they married 1820.
Eleanor Mills married Joseph Smith in Keighley 14/10/1850.

So do we think Emma Mills/Richardson's (b1843 Heslington) parents are a John Mills (b1811) and Mary Richardson (b1815) but that they never married? So Emma occasionally goes by Mills and occasionally by Richardson?

I wonder why she didn't just pick one and stick with it haha? Would have made it a lot easier!
