Find Ancestors

I am new to Ancestry and wonder if someone could help in tracing my Grand farther. I have already tried to find a valid birth date but I only have the following information from my Fathers marriage certificate:
Name: John Buckley
Wife’s name Mary, Alice, Mc Dermott ( according to one record)
Rank or Profession: Fire Watcher (Civil Defence)
He was probably born around 1880 and my search has come up with a whole list of same names with dates around that period so I need a bit of firm evidence with his wife’s name or something?

Married where and when.
Do you have anything else to help us find him?
