Hi, I had a revious thread on this tooic that ony partly answered the question so asking for more help. what I know: Gertrude Abraham b 25/05/1880 Father Joseph Abraham B 1839 - Bedfordshire Mother Annie Royston B 1843 Grantham Lincs I have the 1871 /1881 census for them and their children I know that in 1891 Joseph is no more and Annie is living with a JoSeph Gunson/Glaine from then onwards. So don't really need that side of the research. My interest is in Joseph Abraham. I cannot go further back - on his marriage cert to my gt gt nan his fathers name is 'John abraham' I don't even know if originally was from Bedfordshire as it was the cenus that gave me this. So I would dearly love to know anything on his history thanks kevin

Hi safc, thanks for this. I did see this one but the birth place mentioned is shropshire. On the marriage cert it states Jon is a labourer. The marriage cert is from 1863 and it was in The oarish church in sheffield. It doesnt say that John his father is dead so he was still alive in 1863 do you think Margaret Abraham Servant Unmarried Female 40 1811 House Servant is his sister?

Hi Andrew, deffo looks like him in the 1861 census- he must have moved before his wedding not sure about the name change and if this is the Jospeh and John

Kevin .............
Just becasue a marriage certificate says that a father is not deceased, does not mean that he is alive!
It just means that the vicar did not ask the correct question.
If he asked ..........
"What is your father's name and occupation?"
The reply might give those 2 pieces of information, and the fact that he is deceased may not be given
If the vicar asked ..........
"What is your father's name and occupation? And is he still alive?
THEN the full information would be given
On the other hand, people have been known to say that their father was deceased when he was not .............. sometimes because he had left the family and it was easier to say that, or maybe the child had been told that the father was dead.
In other words, don't take the deceased or not information on a marriage certificate as the absolute truth.
Also be aware that the same might apply to the father's name! Some illegitimate children have even been known to give a false name for the father
