Can't see Thomas dying, or living anywhere after 1861, but there are so many spellings of the surname that I may have missed it.

Quite confusing with all the different spellings of the name :-D

There's a son named 'Thos', aged 4, in the 1861 Census, however there isn't any children aged 14 in the 1871 Census, is it possible that he could've died?

It does look likely that Chittichs was based on family name.

I thought that birth too- think the maiden name could be mistranscribed though?

The Chittich on the 1939 register- looks as though Gavin changed his name at some point. All name changes were added to the register (up to 1991).

EDIT- actually, he didn't change his name, Chittick was his middle name, and was added to the register at a later date.

Keown, I think you'll just have to ignore the newpaper report and the info re Robert born 1892. I can't see a connection at the moment- sorry to have confused things!

The man named Gavin in the 1939 record, it reads Gavin (Chittich) Nicholson, what does the name in brackets mean?

Sorry. I don't know too much about that side of the family, however I know most of the John and Catherines children and grandchildren were born in Felling/Bill Quay area so that most likely is them.
