The new GRO index gives some useful results, but using it is a bit of a pain - going in steps of 5 y, and then repeating every search for the other sex. Also, geographic limitation looser thab the Rego District (e.g., South Shields) is non-obvious. I can use a volume of 10a to get Co Durham in 1852-1911. However, using vol=10b doesn't just get me Northumberland, but also ropes in Westmoreland and Cumberland.

From 1866 on, I use FreeBMD for deaths:
Deaths Jun 1909 (>99%) FLETCHER Annie Eleanor 11 S. Shields 10a 490
I only add the new GRO index if I get a death with age less than 2. Although the new index says age in years for these deaths, they actually give the age in months.
=====================
It's always worth doing a local index lookup, if there's one available and online - see: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
http://online.gateshead.gov.uk/bmd/ John FLETCHER Spouse: Agnes WATT Date: Q1 1893 Register: RO64/94 [The local "RO" code indicates to me that this is a registrar's register, and that the marr either took place in a rego office or a non-conformist church. Pre-1898, the only non-conformists authorized to keep official marr rego's were jews and quakers. A presbyt'n or RC or any other non-conformist marr would require a registrar or asst registrar to attend the ceremony with their official marr rego for the couple to sign to complete the ceremony. Things did not change immediately after the law changed - it took time for the congregation to decide to seek authorization to keep official rego's, to provide a secure location to keep those rego's, and to get official authorization. One can tell if the officiating minister is an authorized person - if he is not, the registrar must sign the marr cert. Most RC churches did not seek approval until 1980-ish. Lack of an official marr rego did not stop a church from keeping it's own unofficial marr rego, which needn't contain the same info as an official marr rego. Indeed, most RC unofficial rego's didn't record the names in English, but latinized them.]
