I have found a relative's marriage and the surname is listed incorrectly. How do I go about getting the information corrected please?

Many thanks.

Hello Peahen-

Where is it incorrectly listed?
is it mistranscribed from the indexes?
Have you looked at the original image of the index?
Or, do you have the marriage certificate and it doesn't match the index?

The family name is listed as Gibson and should be Gilson. The marriage certificate is correct, but it just appears on genes marriage as GIBSON. I need to get this corrected.

Thank you for your reply.

But have you checked the original index (the image of the index?)

If the name is transcribed from the original index incorrectly then you can submit a correction.

If the error is on the original index, I do not think this can be corrected.

If it is your own marriage that is listed incorrectly I think you'd have to contact the registry office for advice.

I have checked the typed listing (is this the Index you mean?) and it states Gibson!

Thanks

If it is your own marriage:

https://www.gov.uk/correct-marriage-registration/what-corrections-can-be-made

or perhaps someone else has more information?

How do I submit a correction and based on my information (sorry for being so ignorant on the Index) I think it is the index as shown on Genes site.

Thank you so much for your help.

Hello Austin Q;

It is not my own marriage, but it is a close relative and the incorrect name renders this an insensitive matter. I am picking its been transcribed wrongly, but this could cause problems further down the line.

Again appreciate your replies and help.

You say I can submit a correct, but https://www.gov.uk/correct-marriage-registration/what-corrections-can-be-made is where I address this - yes?

I thought it may be just a genes thing and they would address the error.

Thanks again.

I'm sorry, I don't think I've explained very well- I'm hoping someone else can make it clearer for you.

It doesn't matter what site the index is on- most are transcribed from the original GRO indexes.

If it was a transcription error from the original indexes- this can be reported to whatever site you are using.

However, if the mistake is on the original GRO indexes, the error will not be corrected

Can someone make this clearer for Peahen please?

Hi AustinQ, no need to apologise - you have been very clear, but I found the error on Genes Record Transcription England & Wales marriages 1837-2008 so I assumed it was a genes error. Does this help you to help me? Is it simple to get corrected or a rigmarole?

It just seems reasonably important mainly from those who seek the information in the future - wrong is wrong and correct is right!!

Thanks again for your patience.

Peahen.

Hi Peahen,

AustinQ is suggesting you look at the image not the transcription. Search again for the marriage - then over on the right you should have two icons available. One is to see the transcription, but the other is to see the original index page. If the transcription is wrong but the index page is correct you can request an amendment. If the original index page is wrong then I don't believe it can be amended.

Ok will do. Believe it or not its mid-night here so will do that now and then hop off - will let you know before I go.

Thanks all.

Thankyou Flip- I was starting to confuse myself!

Ru Report 17 Apr 2017 13:08

Phew!! Well looks like it cannot be corrected as it is the original index page which is incorrect.

Thank you so much for taking the time and helping me to understand. Funny I find the simple things throw me these days - it's called maturing!!

I so appreciate this. Now its goodnight from me and many thanks again.

Just a call in this morning to again thank AustinQ and Flip for your input. It certainly has helped me understand.

I had a look at that site you mentioned AustinQ and you are not confused, but it clearly states that this cannot be corrected:
Under the heading CORRECT A MARRIAGE REGISTRATION there is a sub-heading which states: Who Can apply: Answer = Either of the 2 people who married each other can apply for a correction.

If neither spouse is alive, a correction won’t be authorised.

So thanks that does answer the question and I shall marked this as answered.

Enjoy your spring and my best wishes.
