Are you certain of the middle name? It's just that there is this birth on Findmypast:-
First name(s) EDWARD LAIDLER Last name KERR Birth year 1843 Birth quarter 4 Registration month - Mother's last name - District Morpeth County Northumberland Country England Volume 25 Page 314 Record set England & Wales Births 1837-2006 Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records
The certificate would give his parents names.
The marriage certificate would name his father (if he was known to him):-
First name(s) ELIZABETH Last name STAINSBY Marriage quarter 4 Marriage year 1866 Registration month - MarriageFinderâ„¢ ELIZABETH STAINSBY married one of these people John C Crabb, >>>>>>Edward L Kerr<<<<<< District Hartlepool District number - County Durham Country England Volume 10A Page 193 Record set England & Wales Marriages 1837-2005
EDIT:- I see from the 1881 census his middle name is down as Lauder.

Thanks once again, researchers. I noticed that the middle name of Edward did read Laidlaw,Laidler and Lauder in various records.I assumed this was more to do with the transcribers as much as anything. Peter and Margaret seems to be definite for his parents. I guessed Edwards mothers maiden name was a strong possibility for his middle name.My wife has a middle name which was her mothers maiden name, actually. Once again, thanks very much. Terry L.

I was just curious why Edward is not easy to find in censuses before 1871
Did Margaret re-partner in Peter's absence?
1851 in Haltwhistle
Joseph Smith 50 Margaret Smith 40 John Smith 20 Thomas Smith 18 William Keen 11 - it's Kerr Edward Keen 9 - born Haltwhistle
1861 in Haltwhistle
Joseph Smith 61 Margaret Smith 45 William Smith 21 Edward Smith 19
?
No apparent marriage 1851-1851 (or ever) for Joseph Smith and Margaret Kerr, barring mistranscriptions.
If Peter Kerr returned July 1860, he isn't to be found easily in the 1861 census.
