Find Ancestors

I tried for ages yesterday to make head or tail of it, the legal secretary had appalling writing!

Thank you though for taking the time to tell me what was on it, I did see it was a codicil. Anerley is east of Croydon so I reckon you're right. Interesting that it was bought up by the MLS. I wonder if the local archive centre would have any more information.

Lee- earlier I sent you another part of George's Will- somehow yesterday, I missed the main Will and only sent you the codicil. The original Will was written in 1851 and codicil in 1854.

Basically after all his debts and funeral expenses are paid he leaves everything to his dear wife Anna Maria Patrick, and makes her sole executor of the Will.

The Codicil adds (for his dear wife) lots of freehold land, numbers 475, 476, 477 of Anerly estate in the eastern ?tion of the County of Surrey.

There doesn't appear to be mention of any other family.

I don't know where the boundaries of Surrey used to lie, but wondered if the Anerly estate was what is now know as Anerley (between Croydon and Bromley).

There is mention in the papers that 90 acres of land at Anerly was originally purchased by the Metropolitan Land Society who drained the land, put in sewers and divided the land into small lots.

I don't see any will for Maria/ Anna Maria.

AustinQ - cheeky of me, but is there a will for Maria when she died on Ancestry? I wondered if she left anything to any children she had?

Thank you, yes I'm not sure what it was he left her, was it plots of land, I can't make out where it was, an estate somewhere in Surrey?

AustinQ - Thank you that's really interesting. I can't access Ancestry so cant see Georges will, is it possible to copy and paste or is it too big? I'd be interesyed to see it as I'm curious to know who Richard Pavitt is, he was a witness at Elizabeth's wedding, he was age 11, but if the spelling of his surnames been transcribed wrong it could be Patrick, in which case he could be her half-brother.

That's definitely them at Oak Cottage Croydon, there are more of my family there at that time, Elizabeth married into the Bean family, they're all my lot! There's a good chance that the info you posted here about her being in Tonbridge Kent is feasible.

I have solved something -

Maria remarried in 1823 - George Patrick. St George the Martyr. Southwark.Surrey. I can't find any children for them.

Its very possible there is a link with this, as this church is significant with the family of Conway's, lots of baptisms, marriages and burials there, so it could well be Maria's family, but it can't be Maria, it would have made her 9 when she married.

Does anyone know what age Maria would have been considered a 'minor' but old enough to marry?

Ancestry has the image of the marriage - Maris mistranscribed as Rike. It definitely says minor not widow.

Yes I have her on my family tree, but......

I'm not sure who her mother is. I don't know if she is the daughter of John Tobias and Maria Pike or if her mother was called Elizabeth, in which case he married twice, but I don't know if Eliz Ann was born c1812 or earlier, on Censuses she changes her dates and places of birth.

Elizabeth Ann Conway is supposedly the daughter of John Tobias...... but I've never found a record to confirm that.

how do you get back to maria pike and john tobias conway ?

No, I'm sorry, I see you've got your info from freereg which is where I've just looked also.

I assume one of the transcriptions has a mistake as to whether she was a widow or a minor but it makes a huge difference to her age and also to her maiden name. Without seeing a copy of the original document, we can't tell.

I was wondering whether this could be her with the first husband and a daughter.

I suppose if you think about it.....

if she was a widow, her surname of course would not have been Pike at birth, maybe that's why I can't find a birth entry for her.

So how would I find her previous marriage, anyone any idea?

Still odd I can't find any records of children for John and her in the 9 years of their marriage.
