To find out who lived at 5 Copthall gardens, try the Electoral Roll at the Civic Centre, Folkestone - address and instructions given in this link:

https://www.shepway.gov.uk/the-electoral-register

If they don't have such old ERs, they'll be able to tell you where to find them.
What year are you talking about?

Your grandmother would have required no-one's permission to marry Mr Lott if she was 36 ...................... she was over the age of 21.

"gran said she should have stood up for her daughter"

What do you mean, Phyllis? In what way should your gran have stood up for your aunt?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 6 Feb 2017 19:49

Phyllis ..

I'm sorry but I cannot understand what you have just posted.

Please tell me if this is what you mean?

many thanks on Rueben

it was a shock, I could not make out why he died around the same as his sister annie

you also have it round the wrong way. Gt gran and g granddad took gran to dover, leaving the boys in Folkestone.

I took the name Kathleen from my sister as she has my grans name ellen second and Kathleen third

gran said she should have stood up for her daughter so she did not get passed off as a sister. Dad did have sister three or four years older than him and they went to (??) together

when aunt vanished, they moved from 2 dour st to temple st then they left dover about 1914/15 to live at 92 Canterbury rd Folkestone, were my grand gran parents died.

I went to st eanswith so it was my church

---------

so you do not really know the name of your missing aunt?

If your Father is convinced that she is older than him, and he was born in April 1901, then she should be somewhere on 1901 census.

But, as an alternative approach, if they both went to school together, they should show on a school's admission records.

Probably not on-line, but if someone can find Stanley, then the missing sister may be revealed.

When looking at Death of Reuben the other day (1899) was trying to find him 1891, think Florence might have been the wife, there is a Burial (1897 Folkestone if her)
Couldn't see him...

Just wondered who his 3 children are as stated in newspaper article...

Chris :)

Phyllis,

Are you sure that your aunt was born 1895 to 1898, and was she always called Katie by your Father?

If her Mother was Nellie, born 1881, then Nellie was very young for a birth in 1895.

Who did your Father believe to be his Father?

Thank-you.

SylviaInCanada Report 27 Jan 2017 00:23

I'm a bit confused :-S

Phyllis said in the pm (I added punctuation) ...........

"Her mum was Ellen Matilda Ford, born august 1881in Folkestone
Just before my aunt was born, Ellen, her mum Emma @ (and) dad John Ford moved to Dover, leaving the rest of the family in Folkestone
Her brother was born April 1901 at the same address "

The 1901 Census posted by safc shows ......

John Ford,
wife Emma and
daughter Nellie b.ca1882, Folkestone.

It all looks as though "aunt" was the illegitimate child of Ellen Matilda (Nellie), and that the parents John and Emma took Nellie to Folkestone partly to hide the fact.

In fact ................ re-reading the OP, that is exactly what Phyllis posted!

......... lived with her mother, brother, also her granparents. Her surname was ford"

FORD, STANLEY -
GRO Reference: 1901 J Quarter in DOVER Volume 02A Page 1049

I wonder if Katie was not born in Dover??????

ArgyllGran Report 26 Jan 2017 22:13

You say she and your father went to school together for 8 or 9 years - that would mean until approx 1915, if your father was born 1901.

(Not until 1908 or 1909 as you said in your opening post..)

Maybe she left home to "live in" somewhere for work.
She would be fully old enough to go into service or other work by then.

How do you know Ellen was her mother? Do you have the birth cert? In which case, what was her name? and that would mean her birth was registered, if that's what you mean by "reported".

If Ellen wasn't her mother, maybe she was a foster child or similar, and not your father's sister at all ?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 26 Jan 2017 21:58

all I know is what gave you
her birth was not reported and she was not on the 1901 census

just before my aunt was born ellen her mum emma @dad john ford moved to dover leaving the rest of the family in Folkestone
her brother was born april 1901 at the same address
they went to school together for seven or eight years
it was five minutes from they house walking to wards the town then she vanish into thin air my dad had to walk to school on his own next day

[Phyllis, as I requested in my first PM to you, please add any replies on here - in the white box at the bottom of this page, and click "submit" - then all the helpers can see what you write.]

Do you know what her name was?
Is Katie the person you mean?

When you say her birth was not reported, do you mean it wasn't registered ??
How do you know she was born at 2 Dour Street?

It's a very strange story.

Is it Kate who you are looking for? How do you know about her?

I can't see a record of any sort for a Katie (or variation) Ford born 1897-ish Dover.
