Annie Rogers husband was William Williams (Captain- merchant service).
Annie Lilian's birth cert said her parents married in 1873 in Li?pore? EDIT: Liverpool? (although not seeing marriage- perhaps this is where they docked after marrying on board ship?)
On the birth cert it is a little strange as it says under informant:
Grace Rogers (possibly) New (or now?) Mother of the Child Not present

This is likely Annie and Arthur returning to China (perhaps after dropping the girls in Wales?)

I don't see any of the above entering the UK- they might be mistranscibed, or entered as initials? It's hard - as you say, they wouldn't be travelling to the UK direct from China.
It's likely that Mabel returns to Shangai in 1905- (it doesn't look like she is travelling with family). On her marriage her father is listed as James (deceased).

Thanks Chris, really appreciate the advice. Unfortunately I don't know the exact date of marriage of Captain Williams and Annie Rogers but I believe it was aboard her fathers ship, the age Glenmanna I think it was called. I have no idea if he died or they seperated. All I know about the second marriage is the name Pearson. In this magazine memoir I have it simply refers to him as Mr Pearson. I think I did find some births though way back for the girls so I will try and get back to that and order a birth certificate.
As I said it is a complicated family. Annie Pearson I think did have a lot to do with Minnie and in the early 1900's she moved back to Wales. Minnie died in 1919 leaving 3 young children and a seafaring husband. It was always a family wink, wink story that a 'cousin' moved into Minnie's and Thomas Rogers Evans' house with her young children to look after them all whilst Thomas was away at sea. It turns out it was true and this cousin was Mary Williams - Annie's daughter and Thomas' cousin but it seems she was also a very good friend of Minnie's, as they grew up together in Shanghai.
I will try and look at the UK passenger lists but unless I am doing something wrong I didn't seem to be able to actually access them on a basic ancestry membership.

What else is know for definite about Annie Pearson?, where, when and who did she Marry, when did he die?...
Captain William Wiliams, when did he die?, lots coming up in newspapers...(seems a few of them!)
On Army Records for Arthur John Pearson (on one page, refers to Annie as stepmother)...she then seems to be in Anglesey, is that with Minnie and Thomas?...
Was she a guardian of Minnie?...
If looking at things Swedish, then Nelson could be Neilson etc...
So many names and families, and looking around on google, other 'Threads' about too...
Cotton, Drapers and Captains, all seeming to link to Liverpool...
UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960 (Ancestry)
(you need to look on above, but, beware of Surname variants, if they are on there)
Those names of vessels you have, 'Sattara' etc. references usually found on google search, and Newspapers.

Please could I ask someone to check some passenger lists for me. I am specifically looking for the following people:
Lillie (Lillian) Williams (b1876 Glasgow) Mary Williams (b1878 Shanghai). Mabel Pearson (b1880ish, Shanghai) Ada Pearson (b1882ish, Middlesex London). Annie Pearson (b1852, Carnarvon, Wales) Arthur Pearson (b1888 ish I believe in Shanghai) Minnie Nelson (b1873 Shanghai)
I believe the Williams and the Pearsons all arrived into the Port of London, and I am wondering if Minnie Nelson was travelling with them.
I beleive they will have sailed from Shanghai but realise that this voyage could have taken them via the US or Canada
I am specifically trying to find the passage from Shanghai to the UK, before 1891 please.
I have no idea how to go about finding this information and only have basic membership so if anyone can help point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Many, many thanks
Vicki

Hi Londonbelle
I will definitely look at this as the other people in the house could be a big clue as well.
I think I had always assumed that she came over to the UK around 1890 but this is probably because of the complicated family history that has been passed down as stories. We know Minnie and her family knew her husband's Aunt who was also out in Shanghai - see complicated story below!
Minnie's husband's family were also in Shanghai, specifically his Aunt Annie. Annie Rogers married a Captain William Williams and they had 2 girls, Lillie (Lillian) Williams (b1876 Glasgow), and Mary Williams (b1878 Shanghai). It would then seem Captain WIlliams died and Annie remarried a Mr Pearson, and 2 more girls were born Mabel Pearson (b1880ish, Shanghai) and Ada Pearson (b1882ish, Middlesex London). It is these 4 girls that appear with Minnie in the house of Mary Thomas in the 1891 census (Mary being another Aunt of Minnie's husband - note Minnie didn't marry him until 1894). The mother of the 4 girls Annie Pearson (was Williams, nee Rogers) in 1891 is in the Port of London Hospital with her young son who is a patient there. I had wondered if they all travelled together and the 5 girls were sent on to Annie's sister's house in Wales (Mary Thomas) because the young boy was taken ill on the voyage?
I did a basic search on ancestry under surname Nelson, birth date 1873, port of departure Shanghai and there were numerous hits for Miss Nelson's and M Nelson's but I cant access them any further as I haven't got a full subscription.
So complicated!

There is a Minnie Simpson aged 9 at a school in Lancaster who was born in Shanghai in the 1881 Census.
Could the enumerator have misheard her surname or did the school think that was her surname? I might be clutching at straws here... Lol
