Hi All I have done it wrong again so sorry , I should have said I can not find a birth date for their mothers in Ireland nor for James and needed some advice as to which site or sites would be the best to try most of what i know i have been given by the G/R helpers and i am very grateful Thank you Nellie

Potty Report 13 Dec 2016 12:42

Nellie, I am a bit confused as to who you are looking for. Is it the parents of James Morrison, b1851, and Margaret McManus b either 1859 or 1849? You only mention dates for the mothers and James. Does that mean you have the info for the fathers?

Birth registration in Ireland did not start until 1864, so you will need to search for baptisms.

If you have James & Mary's marriage cert, it will give their father's names & occupations. It may also give their ages at marriage, which should help to determine when Mary was born.

Ancestry has Catholic baptisms but there are several that could be yours. With the fathers' names you could discount some of them.

You might be interested in this - it refers to the David in the 1901/11 census:

http://mspcsearch.militaryarchives.ie/detail.aspx

It refers to an application from James for a pension in respect of David, who was in the IRA and shot by the British Army in 1921. It also mentions his sister Hannah. There are some links to other documents but they seem to refer to a different man.

I have managed to find the web address of one of David's files. It is very interesting and includes letters from members of the family:

Nellie...I am not sure where you are at either...! Probably would have been easier if you had kept on the original thread......

The above is the MC of James Morrison son of David Morrison who married a Mary McManus daughter of Charles McManus at St Patricks 21st Nov.1874.
The couple were living Kent St and Pinkertons Row respectively.

A Dispensation was obtained for the Marriage to take place meaning it may have been for one of the following reasons...
Consanguinity
Affinity
Spiritual Relationship

Or one or the other was Protestant.

Nellie...Anything is possible...!!

Sometimes its a case of pure detective work and picking up little clues along the way....
I don't use Ancestry/FMP.

I cannot find an image for James Morrison (1874) and Mary McManus' marriage so cant comment on "Dispensation" part of it...

Nellie...It only comes with practice and usually spending hours researching your own family over the years.. its not rocket science but most of the helpers "help each other" and have all had to start somewhere and usually long before Ancestry etc.

Nellie, I have just had a closer look at this file:

http://mspcsearch.militaryarchives.ie/docs/files//PDF_Pensions/R5/1D168%20David%20Morrison/1D168%20David%20Morrison.pdf

There are a lot of documents in it, including a letter from James Morrison. In it he states that he was born in 1854 but did not know the month or the day.
