I wondered about this for John and Elizabeth, though he would only have been 18, a bit young?

It's not really TOO young though Kucinta and his death reg in 1889 does show his age as 87, therefore born c 1802, making him 21 ish.

Not sure if this is John in 1871,
Trying to find out what he was an inmate of. Age is a bit older, but born c1802, more like his age at death, but he is described as a carpenter on the image.

That 1823 marriage might still be right, as John the carpenter and Elizabeth had other children baptised South Molton:
First name(s) John Last name Tucker Birth year 1826 Birth date 02 Oct 1826 Baptism year 1826 Denomination Anglican Baptism place South Molton Father's first name(s) John Father's occupation Carpenter Mother's first name(s) Elizabeth Residence - County Devon Archive South West Heritage Trust Record set Devon Baptisms Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Births & baptisms Collections from Great Britain

Father a carpenter on image.

Some of these children were not with the family in 1851, did they die, get farmed out to other relatives when John was widowed, were old enough to go out to work?

Did the family boomerang a bit between Devon & Bristol?
This family on the 1841 census say they were born in county, but were they fibbing? The older boys, John jr, EDWARD, and George are missing, and there is another child, Grace, but head of household John is described as a carpenter. The other [daughters] girls tally with South Molton baptisms for children of John Tucker, carpenter, and wife Elizabeth that I've already posted.
1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census Orchard Square, St Mary Redcliff, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England John Tucker Male 35 1806 Somerset, England - carpenter Elizabh Tucker Female 33 1808 Somerset, England Mary Tucker Female 12 1829 Somerset, England Eizabh Tucker Female 5 1836 Somerset, England Hannah Tucker Female 3 1838 Somerset, England Grace Tucker Female 1 1840 Somerset, England

This might be the 3 missing Tucker boys in 1841, also in St Mary Redcliff, Bristol like their parents and sisters in the census I posted above.
1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription Tenis Court, St Mary Redcliff, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England George Hobbs Male 63 1778 Jane Hobbs Female 32 1809 George Cambean Male 25 1816 James Lockyear Male 30 1811 John Windsor Male 27 1814 John Vilet Male 25 1816 - John Carpenter Male 24 1817 Richd Carpenter Male 22 1819 John Tucker Male 14 1827<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< George Tucker Male 10 1831<<<<<<<<<<<<< Edwin Tucker Male 7 1834<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Though written Edwin on the census image, I suspect it is probably Edward.
No one in the household is born in county (Somerset), so it could well be the 3 Tucker boys from South Molton.

Yes, it is a bit!
I think at the time of the 1841 census, people were still a bit nervous of the previous old settlement laws , and didn't always want to admit they'd been born elsewhere, in case they got shipped back there!
I think it does tie the South Molton baptisms in with the family having moved to Bristol c1840/1, if Grace's birth in South Molton is right.
Not sure why they'd palmed the boys off elsewhere, but ages and names do seem to tie up with the South Molton baptisms apart from Edward's transformation to Edwin.

Edward and Edwin were very often interchangeable so I don't see a problem there.

Just to confirm, the Grace born 1840 in the south Molton district was the daur of a John and Elizabeth:
First name(s) Grace Last name Tucker Birth year - Baptism year 1840 Baptism date 09 Sep 1840 Denomination Anglican Baptism place South Molton Father's first name(s) John Mother's first name(s) Elizth Mother's last name - County Devon Country England Archive South West Heritage Trust Archive reference 3331A/PR/1/7 Record set Devon Baptisms Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Births & baptisms Collections from Great Britain
Image says father was a carpenter.
So it looks like the move to Bristol was only a few months before the 1841 census took place.

I can't identify a baptism for John Tucker c1802 in South Molton.
I note the witnesss at his marriage to Elizabeth Wise in 1823 were Amos and Hannah Selley.
I think Hannah was a relative, maybe a sister? of John Tucker as this seems likely to be the marriage of those two witnesses:
First name(s) Hannah<<<<<<<<<<<<< Last name Tucker<<<<<<<<<<< Marriage year 1822 Marriage date 03 Nov 1822 Parish South Molton Place South Molton Spouse's first name(s) Amos<<<<<<<<<<< Spouse's last name Selley<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Denomination Anglican County Devon Archive South West Heritage Trust Record set Devon Marriages Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Marriages & divorces Collections from Great Britain
The witnesses at this wedding were John Tucker and someone more illegible, maybe Mary Tuckere, but the surname is open to interpretation.
Selley could be just as easily read as Jelley on both registers.
Also John did name one of his daughters Hannah.

There is a Hannah Tucker born South Molton who may be the bride of Amos Selley and witness to John and Elizabeth's wedding, but we can't be sure if she were his sister, or perhaps a cousin or somesuch. So her parents William and Mary may or may not be John's parents.
Quite a lot of maybes! :-(
First name(s) Hannah Last name Tucker Birth year - Baptism year 1799 Baptism date 17 Mar 1799 Denomination Anglican Baptism place South Molton Father's first name(s) William Mother's first name(s) Mary Mother's last name - County Devon Country England Archive South West Heritage Trust Archive reference 3331A/PR/1/4 Record set Devon Baptisms
EDIT, I can only find a John Tucker baptised at South Molton on Familysearch,
John Tucker England Births and Christenings Name John Tucker Gender Male Christening Date 06 Jan 1805 Christening Place SOUTH MOLTON,DEVON,ENGLAND Father's Name William Tucker Mother's Name Mary
Parents are named William and Mary.
Maybe he's been mistranscribed in the Devon baptisms...
EDIT NO, I just missed him. I was probably looking for c1802. No indication as to whether this John baptised 1805 was an infant or a wee bit older.

Thank you all so far for this research, its certainly given me a lot to think about and tie up loose ends. Its sad to think that my g.g.g.grandfather ended up in the workhouse, I wonder if he died there. If you died in a workhouse would you be given a paupers grave, so hence no records? but on saying that why the memoriam card. Although it does read the hour of trouble has past, the of afflication is o er his trouble is ended at last and sorrow and death are no more. Its a sort of sad tribute that could be given to all those poor souls that left this earth from the workhouse. On another matter is Caroline who married Edward, Caroline Quantock? or Caroline of Quantock.
Why my great grandparents moved from Bristol to London still remains a mystery though, as there were certainly from what I can see no ties to London.

He was in the workhouse in 1871, so maybe it was a temporary setback? Can't positively identify him in the 1881 census, so maybe he turned things around.

Sticking in possible marriage for William and Mary, in case you are able to tie them more strongly to John later.
First name(s) William Last name Tucker Marriage year 1798 Marriage date 29 Aug 1798 Parish South Molton Place South Molton Spouse's first name(s) Mary Spouse's last name Vicary Denomination Anglican County Devon Archive South West Heritage Trust Record set Devon Marriages Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Marriages & divorces Collections from Great Britain
If it's them, looks like daughter Hannah was probably on the way!!!
