FindMyPast has stopped working but Edmund Pettman was still around in 1891 and may have remarried in 1913 so Mary probably wasn't free to marry Mr. Castles.

Maybe she was the Mrs. Mortlock on Miriam's 1913 school record as Ann didn't become Mrs. Mortlock til like 1916. Did the sisters marry the same Mortlock?
Doesn't help us find what happened to Miriam after 1939. Can't see a death for Miriam's mother Mary either.

Can I thank everyone for the information that has been posted on this thread.
I was already in possession of some of the facts, but there has been other facts which I ws not aware of. The two Pettman daughters did marry two brothers. Gertrude's first husband was lost at Sea when the trawler he was working on failed to return. Her second husband as shown above was lost during the first world war.
It is fairly obvious that when Mary A Lamming left her husband Edmund Lawton Pettman and lived with Albert Castles, that she took the two girls with her and then used the name Castles for them. However they married under the correct name of Pettman. Mary died in 1911, and was buried under name of Pettman, not Castles
Once again many thanks everyone

I have found the death notices in the Local paper for Edward Allport Cant and his second wife Clarice Ethel. Interestingly, their residence was different although they died within a month of each other. neither referred to each other. In Edward's notice, the children from his marriage to Miriam were referred to, but not his children with Clarice. In Clarice's notice only the children she had with Edward were mentioned. All the children between Edward and Clarice were born before their marriage in 1951. They would appear to have separated between 1976 and their deaths in 1983.
I still have not resolved the the problem around Miriam, whether she remarried or died before the 1951 marriage
Once again many thanks to all.
